Mary Wilkins Freeman (1852–1930), born in Randolph, Massachusetts, began to publish stories about New England in the early 1880s. In the following decades, Freeman drew widespread praise for her intimate portraits of women and her realistic depictions of rural New England life. She published short stories, essays, novels, plays, and children’s books. Her stories, written in a clear and direct prose, are remarkable for their unpretentious, sympathetic portrayals of the lives of ordinary New Englanders of Freeman’s era. Many of the stories depict rebellion against oppressive social and private conditions. Others describe conflicting desires for independence and lasting relationships. This volume of twenty-eight stories is the first to provide a representative sample of Freeman’s finest work, from all phases of her career. It makes plain why Freeman (in the words of editor Mary R. Reichardt) is widely recognized as an important figure “in the history of American women’s fiction . . . and the development of the American short story.”

Freeman is best known today for her short regionalist fiction. Recently, Freeman studies have taken new turns including ecocriticism, trauma studies, the Gothic, and queer theory. The essay collection pushes these developments further. Contributors aim at revisiting and going beyond Freeman's regionalism. They challenge earlier feminist readings of the female realm by arguing that her short fiction and novels depict women and girls as violent and criminal, suffocating as well as nurturing; they bring to light questions of race and ethnicity that have been conspicuously absent from scholarship on Freeman, as well as issues of class. Because questions of women's work are central to Freeman's oeuvre, this collection discusses Freeman's acumen as a businesswoman herself, a participant as well as a castigator of turn-of-the-century US capitalism. Finally, essays reconsider the periodization of Freeman by exploring her little acknowledged post-1902 and therefore post-marriage fiction-her war stories and her urban stories.

Mary Eleanor Wilkins Freeman was born in Randolph, Massachusetts on October 31st, 1852. Her parents, Eleanor Lothrop and Warren Edward Wilkins, originally baptized her "Mary Ella." They were orthodox Congregationalists and brought Mary up very strictly, a theme which Mary used in her works throughout her career. The family moved to Brattleboro, Vermont, in 1867, from where Mary graduated from the local high school before continuing her education at Mount Holyoke Female Seminary in South Hadley, Massachusetts, for the year 1870-71.
