Reimagining Jerusalem’s Architectural Identities in the Later Middle Ages
How can medieval art explain Jerusalem’s centrality in the world faiths of Christianity and Islam? This book delves into that topic by examining how Jerusalem was creatively represented and reimagined in several intriguing Christian and Islamic artworks in the later Middle Ages (c. 1187 to 1356). The book considers how European Catholic crusaders, Eastern Christian sects, and diverse Muslim factions displayed Jerusalem’s architecture to express their interpretation of the holy city’s sanctity and influence. These examples demonstrate how artworks can reflect Jerusalem’s importance to these faiths in the past and illuminate our understanding of its status into the modern era.
The Story of Drawing
Drawing is at the heart of human creativity. The most democratic form of art-making, it requires nothing more than a plain surface and a stub of pencil, a piece of chalk or an inky brush. Our prehistoric ancestors drew with natural pigments on the walls of caves, and every subsequent culture has practised drawing - whether on papyrus, parchment or paper. Artists throughout history have used drawing as part of the creative process. The Story of Drawing loops around the established history of art, sometimes staying close, at other times diving into exhilarating and altogether less familiar territory.

This book is based on the postmedieval journal special issue Contact zones: Fur, minerals, milk, and other things. It offers strategies for writing the companions of our humanity. Just as the book entails contact zones between scholars working across languages, periods, regions, and disciplines, we each envision contact zones between materials, bodies, and identities as multidirectional agentic exchanges that define and enact material-semiotic entanglements. Together, the chapters offer disanthropocentric readings of materiality that center the more-than-human agencies that impact human identities and embodiments across the medieval world.
