The Oxford Handbook of Archaeology and Language

This volume provides a comprehensive and up-to-date overview of how archaeology, genes, and language can be combined to shed light on the human past. Our understanding of human prehistory has been revolutionized in recent years by the growth of interdisciplinary perspectives, and particularly by insights from the study of ancient DNA. At a time when the 'Big Data' movement in genetics and archaeology is beginning to make inroads into linguistics, The Oxford Handbook of Archaeology and Language sets the agenda for future research in the discipline of archaeolinguistics. The handbook is divided into three parts. The first part introduces the basic frameworks of archaeolinguistics, addressing r...

This comparative dictionary provides a bottom-up reconstruction of the Rote‑Meto languages of western Timor. Rote-Meto is one low-level Austronesian subgroup of eastern Indonesia/Timor-Leste. It contains 1,174 reconstructions to Proto-Rote-Meto (or a lower node) with supporting evidence from the modern Rote-Meto languages. These reconstructions are accompanied by information on how they relate to forms in other languages including Proto‑Malayo‑Polynesian etyma (where known) and/or out-comparisons to putative cognates in other languages of the region. The dictionary also contains two finder-lists: English to Rote-Meto, and Austronesian reconstructions with Rote-Meto reflexes. The dictio...

A Polymath Anthropologist

This volume honours Ann Chownings contributions to anthropology as a whole and to the anthropology of Melanesia in particular. It reflects the scope of her interests by bringing together a wide range of scholars and topics. A biographical narrative (by Judith Huntsman) of her life to date traces her career and there is a comprehensive bibliography of her works (Kathryn Creely). The essays deal primarily with issues in Oceania, except for two addressing one of her favourite pasttimes detective fiction, as a source of innovative word formation (Laurie Bauer) and its parallels to ethnography (Claudia Gross). Three archaeology essays discuss stone artefacts in Papua New Guinea (Pamela Swadling, ...

Relatively little historical-comparative work has been done on the languages of the vast Trans New Guinea family, and this book breaks new ground with a study of the Binanderean languages of the Morobe and Oro Provinces of southeast mainland Papua New Guinea. The author investigates the phonological history of the group and reconstructs the sound system, core lexicon, and some bound morphology of Proto Binandere. She postulates an inventory of Proto Binandere segmental phonemes, together with sequences of regular sound changes leading to the reflexes of these phonemes in the daughter languages. The shared innovations which these changes represent allow the construction of a family tree. The ...
