American Paintings at Harvard
This volume features nearly 500 paintings, watercolors, pastels, and miniatures from Harvard University's storied, yet little-known, collection of American art. These works, many unpublished, are drawn from the Harvard Art Museums, the University Portrait Collection, the Peabody Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology, and other entities, and date from the early colonial years to the mid-19th century. Back in 1905, pioneer Seventh-day Adventist Ellen G. White insisted that such an institution be established somewhere in Southern California, near Redlands and Riverside. She also predicted properties would become available that were far below their initial price. Fellow Adventist pioneer John Burden found a property that had failed in two previous business ventures--first as a hotel, then as a sanitarium. The asking price was already well below the property's value, and the buildings were already fully furnished and stocked. "Make an offer," White told him. With his own money as down payment, Burden set in motion what has become a network of multiple hospitals and professional schools.
