This book draws on the research of some of the leading scholars in the fields of Jewish-Islamic relations, the Israeli-Arab conflict and political Islam. These highly topical essays examine the relationship between Israel and the Islamic world from both a thematic and geo-strategic perspective. Divided into two distinct sections, the first section of the book deals with issues relating to contemporary Jewish-Muslim relations and, in particular, looks at the attitude towards the Jewish state amongst opinion-makers, religious institutions and leaders in the Muslim world. Key issues such as the Islamic attitude to Palestinian suicide-bombing, and Arab anti-Semitism are addressed here. The second section examines the attitude of key Muslim nations – Egypt, Iran, Turkey, Indonesia and Pakistan – to the Jewish state, and charts the evolving, bilateral relationship between these nations and Israel from the birth of the Jewish State in 1948 up to the present day. This book was previously published as a special issue of the journal Israel Affairs.

India and Israel contextualises the varied aspects of the partnership between India and Israel, with a specific focus on the dominant driver — the defence engagement between the two sides, forged in the context of mutual complementarities. India’s broad-spectrum relationship with Israel transformed into a strategic partnership in 2017, a quarter century after the establishment of full diplomatic ties. India and Israel have successfully steered the relationship forward, despite the baggage of fraught and convulsive neighbourhoods. The contributors to this volume include policy makers and military leaders who played an important role in the growth of the relationship, as well as academics ...

Hearts and Minds

Small-scale wars, terrorism, and guerilla warfare, each characterized by low-intensity violence are the new global reality in the twenty-first century. States in general, and liberal democratic states in particular, are compelled to develop a new operational approach to deal with these phenomena. At the same time the world of diplomacy is experiencing its own upheaval, its old closed-door practices being displaced by the demand for ongoing public diplomacy. Concurrent with these developments, individuals and nongovernmental organizations harness the new media revolution to create powerful global networks to promote common causes, transcending the state and breaking its exclusive control over...

Routledge Handbook on Israel's Foreign Relations

This Handbook provides a comprehensive account of contemporary Israeli diplomacy and analyses the changing dynamics of Israel’s bilateral relations with other states and the international community over the past seventy-five years. Research into Israeli foreign policy has been largely sidelined by debates over security, domestic politics and the Israeli–Palestinian conflict. This Handbook addresses the gap in the literature. Comprising 31 essays written by leading scholars of Israel, the Handbook explicates how domestic, societal and economic interests, together with changing Israeli narratives of identity and location, shape and impact Israeli foreign policy. It illustrates how those fa...

Contemporary concerns with the way the movement of Islamist ideas has radicalized Southeast Asia are put in a necessary deep historical context by this timely book. The fourteen authors represent the best of the new trilingual scholarship doing justice to both Arabic and Indonesian sources. They reach back to the seventh century to explain how trade brought the two crossroads of Eurasia together, and Islam provided the passion and the idiom for their subsequent complex interactions. There are no centers and peripheries in this sophisticated interpretation of how waves of reform have affected both homelands. Such relationships contribute to regional and global events in many crucial ways, and this volume is important for anyone interested in the future of Asia and the Middle East.

Research Paper (postgraduate) from the year 2015 in the subject History - Asia, National University of Malaysia, course: History, language: English, abstract: When it's a matter of relations with Israel, the Malaysian government such as on the horns because any incident could impact the government's image in the eyes of the people. A brief review of Malaysia-Israel relations historiography reveals that while there is a large amount of literature on the negative aspects between the two countries, not much is written about the positive aspects of the past, bringing to the Look-To-Israel idea. This study will examine the extent of the Malaysian government's acceptance against Israeli involvement in this country, the sectors involved, contributing to the importance of this study because it identifies the scale and scope of the relationship between Israel and Malaysia despite the absence of diplomatic relations over the years. Answers to these questions will provide the basis for determining and understanding the level of relations between the Israeli government and the Malaysian government.
