As an integral part of the modern West, terrorism features prominently in the news, in film and television, even in video games and books. Packaged for public consumption, representations of terrorism and terrorists offer attempts to make sense of the contemporary experience. While terrorism is often treated as a topic of concern for mature audiences, this book focuses on media that are aimed at children and young adults. The contributors investigate the way terrorism is portrayed in movies, television shows, literature, games, and other popular culture formats aimed at these younger audiences, focusing particularly on the impact these portrayals have on these audiences as future decision-makers.
Studio Ghibli Animation as Adaptations
This collection investigates how Hayao Miyazaki, Isao Takahata, and other Studio Ghibli storytellers have approached the process of reimagining literary sources for animation. Studio Ghibli is renowned for its original storytelling in films like My Neighbor Totoro, but many of its most famous films, including Howl's Moving Castle and Ponyo, have their origins in pre-existing novels, manga, or fairy tales. Studio Ghibli's adaptations seldom directly translate source material to animation, but instead transform the works to incorporate themes or imagery central to the studio's sensibilities. Studio Ghibli Animation as Adaptations explores how these adaptations often blur genre boundaries and raise questions about what constitutes fidelity to source material. The collection also shows how the studio reinterprets and recontextualizes stories across cultures for Japanese audiences and across mediums like manga.
Discovering Dune
Frank Herbert's Dune is one of the most well-known science fiction novels of all time, and it is often revered alongside time-honored classics like The Lord of the Rings. Unlike Tolkien's work, the Dune series has received remarkably little academic attention. This collection includes fourteen new essays from various academic disciplines--including philosophy, political science, disability studies, Islamic theology, environmental studies, and Byzantine history--that examine all six of Herbert's Dune books. As a compendium, it asserts that a multidisciplinary approach to the texts can lead to fresh discoveries. Also included in this collection are an introduction by Tim O'Reilly, who authored one of the first critical appraisals of Herbert's writings in 1981, and a comprehensive bibliography of essential primary and secondary sources.
