The Emission Reduction Effects of Spatial Agglomeration

The book studies the relationship between economic agglomeration and environmental pollution from a spatial perspective through theoretical analyses and empirical discussions. Drawing on descriptive statistics and explorative spatial data from 283 cities in China, the book investigates the current development, spatial characteristics, influence path, and environmental efficiency of urban economic agglomeration and pollution in the People’s...

Regulation is a public policy approach closely related to calculations of the equilibrium of supply and demand and to cost-benefit analyses. Governments combine a variety of incentives and restrictions on behavior, including laws and regulations, in order to guide enterprises and smaller entities within the economy toward pursuing policies in the public interest. This book offers an in-depth and systematic review of the economic theory of regulation, with particular emphasis on the Chinese context. The basic concepts cover economic and social regulation, regulatory process, regulation under asymmetric information, and capture theory. State-Owned Enterprise's Ownership Reform

In reviewing the new round of state-owned enterprise (SOE) reforms characterized by mixed ownership since 2013 in China, this book systematically investigates the theoretical underpinnings, model options and approaches to implementation of SOE mixed-ownership reforms. SOE reforms have functioned as an integral part of China’s transformation to a market-oriented economy. Responding to the changing economic context and negative repercussions of earlier SOE reforms launched in the late 1990s, SOE mixed-ownership reforms encourage the participation of different types of capital and sounder management mechanisms. The author first reviews the impetus behind SOE mixed-ownership reforms and discus...

Gendering Chinese Religion

Gendering Chinese Religion

Gendering Chinese Religion marks the emergence of a subfield on women, gender, and religion in China studies. Ranging from the medieval period to the present day, this volume departs from the conventional and often male-centered categorization of Chinese religions into Confucianism, Buddhism, Daoism, and popular religion. It makes two compelling arguments. First, Chinese women have deployed specific religious ideas and rituals to empower themselves in various social contexts. Second, gendered perceptions and representations of Chinese religions have been indispensable to the historical and contemporary construction of social and political power. The contributors use innovative ways of discovering and applying a rich variety of sources, many previously ignored by scholars. While each of the chapters in this interdisciplinary work represents a distinct perspective, together they form a coherent dialogue about the historical importance, intellectual possibilities, and methodological protocols of this new subfield.
