The thesis of this book is threefold. First, contrary to the increasingly popular understanding that the nature of Ham's offense was sexual, we argue that this offense was nonsexual, despite the presence of the phrase ("to see the nakedness of") in Genesis 9:22. More specifically, Ham's offense had less to do with seeing his father naked--the seeing was accidental. Rather, his fault lay with his choice to disclose to his brothers what he had seen as opposed to covering the nakedness of his father. Second, the most probable fulfillment of the Noah's curse is (1) the servitude of the Gibeonites; (2) the enslavement of the Canaanites following the conquest; or (3) the dominance of Rome and Gree...

The Dynamics of Dream-Vision Revelation in the Aramaic Dead Sea Scrolls

Among the predominantly Hebrew collection of the Dead Sea Scrolls are twenty-nine compositions penned in Aramaic. While such Aramaic writings were received at Qumran, these materials likely originated in times before, and locales beyond, the Qumran community. In view of their unknown past and provenance, this volume contributes to the ongoing debate over whether the Aramaic texts are a cohesive corpus or accidental anthology. Paramount among the literary topoi that hint at an inherent unity in the group is the pervasive usage of the dream-vision in a constellation of at least twenty writings. Andrew B. Perrin demonstrates that the literary convention of the dream-vision was deployed using a ...

Despite the ever-expanding body of Deleuzian scholarship, single volume has explored the religious dimensions of Delueze's writing. Now, Mary Bryden has assembled a team of international scholars to do just that. Their essays illustrate the ways in which Deleuzian thought is antithetical to religious debate, as well as the ways in which it contributes to those debates. This volume will be invaluable for researchers, teachers and students of theology, philosophy, critical theory, cultural studies and literary criticism as well as to students of French who read Deleuze's work in its original language.

This book synthesizes law in ancient Mesopotamia from its beginnings (roughly 3000 BC) to about 1600 BC. Author Russ VerSteeg explains Mesopotamian law using modern legal categories as points of reference in order to make the subject more accessible to the reader. Early Mesopotamian Law is the first book of its kind, filling a void of information left by most ancient law books, which discuss the law of Ancient Greece and Rome. It brings together information from many books on Mesopotamian history; translations of ancient law collections and documents; as well as monographs, journal articles, and unpublished papers dealing with specialized aspects of Mesopotamian law. This book will be of int...

The Dawn of Agriculture and the Earliest States in Genesis 1-11

This book invites a close textual encounter with the first 11 chapters of Genesis as an intimate drama of marginalised peoples wrestling with the rise of the world’s first grain states in the Mesopotamian alluvium. The initial 11 chapters of Genesis are often considered discordant and fragmentary, despite being a story of beginnings within the context of the Bible. Readers discover how these formative chapters cohere as a cross-generational account of peoples grappling with the hegemonic spread of domesticated grain production and the concomitant rise of the pristine states of Mesopotamia. The book reveals how key episodes from the Genesis narrative reflect major societal revolutions of th...
