User Modeling 2007
This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 11th International Conference on User Modeling, UM 2007, held in Corfu, Greece in July 2007. Coverage includes evaluating user/student modeling techniques, data mining and machine learning for user modeling, user adaptation and usability, modeling affect and meta-cognition, as well as intelligent information retrieval, information filtering and content personalization.
Developing Ambient Intelligence
At the time of the introduction of the Ambient Intelligence (AmI) concept many scenarios where considered to be visionary or even science fiction. Enabled by current technology, many aspects of these scenarios are slowly but inexorably becoming true. However, we are still facing important challenges that need further investments in research and industrialization. Current software engineering techniques and tools are not prepared to deal with the development of applications for what we could call AmI ecosystems, lacking a fixed architecture, controlled limits and even owners. The comfortable boundaries of static architectures and well-defined limits and owners are not existent in these AmI ecosystems. In its second year AmI.d again shows the heterogeneity of research challenges related to Ambient Intelligence. Many disciplines are involved and have to co-ordinate their efforts in resolving the strongly related research issues.
In Detail, Work Environments
The requirements confronting our workplaces have recently undergone a dramatic transformation. Constantly shifting workspace populations and varying uses of workspace call for flexible spatial structures, and so do new professions and innovative working methods. The plannung of workspaces is influenced by the digitalization of our storage media as well as by new materials and building technologies. And yet for all the importance of flexibility and technology, the ultimate focus is still on human beings. How, then can the multilayered concepts of indoor climate, lighting, acoustics, and ergonomics be reconciled with spatial structures that lend themselves to a variety of uses? In keeping with the typological approach of the series, this volume of the series In Detail presents the various work environments organized according to use. The focus throughout is on the successful interplay between technical standards, organizational structures, and human needs.

Ubicomp 2001: Ubiquitous Computing
This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the Third International Conference on Ubiquitous Computing, Ubicomp 2001, held in Atlanta, GA, USA in September/October 2001. The 14 revised full papers and 15 revised technical notes were carefully selected during a highly competitive reviewing process from a total of 160 submissions (90 paper submissions and 70 technical notes submissions). All current aspects of research and development in the booming area of ubiquitous computing are addressed. Man-computer Interaction Research
Since MACINTER I appeared two years ago, research into human-computer interaction has been advancing at an undiminished rate all over the world. The papers in this book deal with the psychological aspects of human-computer interaction, and present the results of basic and applied psychological research. The basic research areas are cognitive issues in human-computer interaction, user's mental models, user's strategies, knowledge representation and elicitation, and learning and user training. The application of findings in psychology-based system design is also discussed. Emphasis is placed on both interdisciplinary cooperation (between psychology and computer science) as well as intradisciplinary cooperation (between different fields of psychology e.g. cognitive and industrial psychology). A general overview on the state of the art in quite different groups in East and West Europe and Japan is presented. Empirical data as well as theoretical and methodological approaches for the practical design of human-computer interaction are summarized in this book.
