This volume includes the papers presented during the 1st Euro-Mediterranean Conference for Environmental Integration (EMCEI) which was held in Sousse, Tunisia in November 2017. This conference was jointly organized by the editorial office of the Euro-Mediterranean Journal for Environmental Integration in Sfax, Tunisia and Springer (MENA Publishing Program) in Germany. It aimed to give a more concrete expression to the Euro-Mediterranean integration process by supplementing existing North-South programs and agreements with a new multilateral scientific forum that emphasizes in particular the vulnerability and proactive remediation of the Euro-Mediterranean region from an environmental point o...
Direct cell–cell communication is a common property of multicellular organisms that is achieved through membrane channels which are organized in gap junctions. The protein subunits of these intercellular channels, the connexins, form a multigene family that has been investigated in great detail in recent years. It has now become clear that, in different tissues, connexins speak several languages that control specific cellular functions. This progress has been made possible by the availability of new molecular tools and the improvement of basic techniques for the study of membrane channels, as well as by the use of genetic approaches to study protein function in vivo. More important, connex...
This is an open access book that addresses the need for hybridization in energy storage, offering a fresh perspective on integrating diverse storage solutions to support a successful energy transition. It fills a significant gap in the literature by presenting a comprehensive collection of case studies and real-world examples, while tackling challenges across multiple sectors, including industrial operations, grid, off-grid systems, transportation, and smart building applications. Authored by a multidisciplinary team of leading experts, the book explores technology-neutral requirements for different applications and examines the key drivers behind system installations. It proposes innovative...
This book is coordinated by the UNESCO Chair on Modern Urban heritage CREhAR (Creative Research and Education on heritage Assessment and Regeneration), at the School of Architecture, Universidad de Sevilla (USE), institutions and their research groups which constitute a benchmark for research on cultural heritage and sustainability. Developed in the context of a European network of five universities, University of Belgrade, Serbia; University of Seville, Spain; IUAV University of Venice, Italy; University of Cyprus, Cyprus; and Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece- this consortium on heritage and sustainability have been collaborating closely, both as authors and editors. This book c...
This edited book includes more than four hundred short papers that were presented during the fourth edition of EMCEI, which was held in Sousse, Tunisia in November 2022. The book appeals to anyone working in the subject area and especially students interested in learning more about new developments in environmental research initiatives in light of the worsening...
This book includes over three hundred and seventy-five short papers presented during the second EMCEI, which was held in Sousse, Tunisia in October 2019. After the success of the first EMCEI in 2017, the second installment tackled emerging environmental issues together with new challenges, e.g. by focusing on innovative approaches that contribute to achieving a sustainable environment in the Mediterranean and surrounding regions and by highlighting to decision makers from related sectors the environmental considerations that should be integrated into their respective activities. Presenting a wide range of environmental topics and new findings relevant to a variety of problems in these regions, this volume will appeal to anyone working in the subject area and particularly to students interested in learning more about new advances in environmental research initiatives in view of the worsening environmental degradation of the Mediterranean and surrounding regions, which has made environmental and resource protection into an increasingly important issue hampering sustainable development and social welfare.
This edited book includes over one hundred and eighty short papers that were presented during the third edition of EMCEI, which was held in Sousse, Tunisia, in June 2021. Nowadays, experts as well as most of the general public know that the Mediterranean and surrounding regions are facing environmental degradation that is accelerating at an unprecedented rate. The main causes are the natural and human induced climate change, increasing pollution, urban growth, and the overexploitation and unsustainable use of resources due to rapid population growth. The effects are seen in several indicators such as the warming, more frequent extreme events, severe droughts, water shortages, contraction of ...
This book includes over three hundred and seventy short papers that were presented during the fifth EMCEI, which was held at the University of Calabria in Rende-Cosenza, Italy, in October 2023. In view of the environmental degradation that is accelerating at an unprecedented rate in the Mediterranean and surrounding regions, this book includes research studies on: engineering applications for environmental management; ecotoxicology, environmental safety, and bioremediation; biotechnology for environmental management; climate-change-related effects on the environment and ecological systems; natural resources, agriculture, and the environment; smart technologies for environmentally friendly en...
