Focused on Aḥmad Ibn ‘Ajība – an eighteenth-century Moroccan Sufi scholar renowned for his contribution to Sufi Qur’ānic exegesis – this book engages critically with his theory of divine love to elucidate his impact on the wider field of Qur’ānic scholarship. The principal source of analysis is Ibn ‘Ajība’s Oceanic Exegesis of the Qur’ān which connected theoretical works on the concept of divine love to their practical application, a breakthrough in Sufi literature. Close analysis of this text is supplemented by a comparative approach focusing on several other eminent Sufi commentaries, including those of Abū al-Qāsim al-Qushayrī and Rūzbihān Baqlī Shīrāzī. Latin America is a diverse mosaic of cultures that trace their origins back to Indigenous, African, Spanish, Portuguese and Islamic sources. Its philosophies, eloquently expressed by a long line of thinkers, are found not just in departments of philosophy, but also in its rich literature and art, which are given treatment in this volume. The Islamicate world is a unique, fourteen-century-old cultural mosaic that covers much of the known world. Despite its long civilizational experience, it too faces the challenge of emancipation from foreign domination and the chaotic cacophony of monologues afflicting our time. The papers collected here cover various aspects of the philosophies of these two...
This book investigates the role of love as an exegetical resource for interpreting the Bible and the Qur'an. Through surveying the ways in which love was used to make sense of the Jewish, Christian, and Muslim Scriptures, this book advocates and argues for a hermeneutical approach that reads the Bible and the Qur'an through the lens of love. Engaging various exegetical authorities from the Jewish, Christian, and Muslim traditions, Tareq Hesham Moqbel identifies numerous cases of love-informed exegesis covering diverse themes and exegetical techniques. The exegetical dialogue presented in this book shows that the idea of love takes on greater meaning when studied from the standpoint of comparative exegesis. Moreover, by analysing this topic through a comparative lens, the book argues for a novel conceptualisation of love as an exegetical tool, and a reading ethic, that connects the Abrahamic scriptural traditions and can be applied beyond them.

This book focuses on women’s important contribution to Sufism by analyzing the lives and seminal contributions of six mystic Sufi women to Islamic spirituality. Taking a historical approach attentive to specific political contexts, readers will be introduced to the contributions of Umm Ali al-Balkhī and Fātima of Nishāpūr in the ninth-century Khurāsān, Aisha al-Mannūbiyya of the Hafsid dynasty in Ifrīqya, Aisha al-Bā‘ūnīyya of the Mamlūk...

This Handbook accompanies the reader int...

Mustafa al-ʻAlawī (1869-1934) who was born in Mustaghānim in Algeria and is considered to be one of the contemporary Sufi revivalists of the Twentieth century.
