The Holocaust and Australian Journalism

This book explores the Australian press reporting of the persecution and genocide of European Jews, and the extent to which the news of the Holocaust was known and believed, revealed and hidden, and acknowledged and minimised. Spanning the coverage of Hitler’s political ascent in the 1920s through to the Nazis’ extermination campaign, it culminates in the accounts of the trials of Nazi war criminals and the post-war transnational migration to Australia of Holocaust survivors, to a country far from universally welcoming in its reception of them. The book also tells the story of the journalists who reported on these tragic events and the editors who published them, along with the political...

A Modern History of Forgotten Genocides and Mass Atrocities

This is the first textbook of its kind to amass cases of genocide and other mass atrocities across the nineteenth, twentieth, and twenty-first centuries that have largely been pushed to the periphery of Genocide Studies or “forgotten” altogether. Divided into four thematic sections – Genocide and Imperialism; War and Genocide; State Repression, Military Dictatorships, and Genocide; and Human-Caused Famine, Attrition, and Genocide – A Modern History of Forgotten Genocides and Mass Atrocities covers five continents, including case studies from Biafra, Yemen, Argentina, Russia, China, and Bengal. They range from the French conquest of Algeria in the mid-nineteenth century to the Yazidi ...

The Armenian Genocide

With its analytical introductory essays, more than 140 individual entries, a historical timeline, and primary documents, this book provides an essential reference volume on the Armenian Genocide. The Armenian Genocide has often been considered a template for subsequent genocides and is one of the first genocides of the 20th century. As such, it holds crucial historical significance, and it is critically important that today's students understand this case study of inhumanity. This book provides a much-needed, long-overdue reference volume on the Armenian Genocide. It begins with seven introductory analytical essays that provide a broad overview of the Armenian Genocide and then presents indi...

Canada-Australia

This volume is the result of the Association for Canadian Studies in Australia and New Zealand (ACSANZ) 1995 conference held at La Trobe University in Melbourne, Australia. A special feature of the conference, though not its exclusive focus, was trade relations. But as with all ACSANZ conferences, the papers were wide-ranging and contributors were not limited to a single theme. This publication is a refereed collection from more than sixty papers that were presented and range from discussions of immigration policy in Canada and Australia to architectural practices in British Columbia; from Canadian influences on Australia's economic development to issues of identity politics in each nation's literature. In addition, the collection represents major research in the areas of globalization, migration, pluralism, and ethnic relations, with a strongly, though not exclusively, comparative orientation. This work is a co-publication with the International Council for Canadian Studies.

From 1933-45 ca. 20-25,000 Jewish refugees lived, for various periods, in Hungary; in addition, a number of Jews entered the country in the fall of 1939 as part of the wave of Polish military and civil refugees. The National Central Alien Control Office (Külföldieket Ellenőrző Országos Központi Hatóság, KEOKH) affiliated with the Interior Ministry, was established in order to supervise the foreigners (Jewish and non-Jewish) living in Hungary. Rapidly, the KEOKH turned into a "de-Jewification commando", predating the Eichmann commando, which came to Hungary after the country's German occupation in 1944. The KEOKH not only prevented attempts by alien Jews to obtain a citizenship certif...
