Technology-Enhanced Learning

Technology-enhanced learning is a timely topic, the importance of which is recognized by educational researchers, practitioners, software designers, and policy makers. This volume presents and discusses current trends and issues in technology-enhanced learning from a European research and development perspective. This multifaceted and multidisciplinary topic is considered from four different viewpoints, each of which constitutes a separate section in the book. The sections include general as well as domain-specific principles of learning that have been found to play a significant role in technology-enhanced environments, ways to shape the environment to optimize learners’ interactions and ...

William Wordsworth (1770-1850) needs little introduction as the central figure in Romantic poetry and a crucial influence in the development of poetry generally. This broad-ranging survey redefines the variety of his writing by showing how it incorporates contemporary concepts of language difference and the ways in which popular and serious literature were compared and distinguished during this period. It discusses many of Wordsworth's later poems, comparing his work with that of his regional contemporaries as well as major writers such as Scott. The key theme of relationship, both between characters within poems and between poet and reader, is explored through Wordsworth's construction of community and his use of power relationships. A serious discussion of the place of sexual feeling in his writing is also included.

Modelling Web-based Learning Ecosystems for Aggregation and Reuse

Computer Support for Collaborative Learning

Computer Support for Collaborative Learning (CSCL) is a field of study centrally concerned with meaning and the practices of meaning-making in the context of joint activity, and the ways in which these practices are mediated through designed artifacts. This volume includes abstracts of papers that were presented during interactive poster sessions at CSCL 2002. Documenting an extremely heterogeneous, productive phase of inquiry with broad social consequences, these proceedings reflect the current state of CSCL research--particularly in North America and Western Europe.

By modeling pedagogical scenarios as directed geometrical graphs and proposing an associated modeling language, this book describes how rich learning activities, often designed for small classes, can be scaled up for use with thousands of participants. With the vertices of these graphs representing learning activities and the edges capturing the pedagogical relationship between activities, individual, team, and class-wide activities are integrated into a consistent whole. The workflow mechanisms modeled in the graphs enable the construction of scenarios that are richer than those currently implemented in MOOCs. The cognitive states of learners in two consecutive activities feed a transition ...

Lessons from Learning

The last thirty years have produced a widely varying series of research experiments and innovative practices in the uses of computer and communications technologies to support teaching and learning. Relatively recently, enough experience has been accumulated to justify significant investment in implementing systems across a broad range of educational and training domains. Much of this experience has been pragmatic and attempts to place the activity within a substantive cognitive framework have not met with much success. Lessons have been learnt from the experience but there are many complex issues of knowledge representation, acquisition and long-term accommodation linked to the role of huma...

Coping with the New Security Challenges of Europe

This book summarises the workshops and presentations held during the 4th International Security Forum (ISF) in Geneva from 15 to 17 November 2000. It presents an overview of the themes and projects discussed during the conference. The 4th International Security Forum was organised by the Geneva Centre for Security Policy (GSCP). It was the intention with this 4th ISF to create a platform for discussion and an exchange of ideas on academic, humanitarian, military and other aspects of security issues. During the 4th International Security Forum, a wide range of topics were discussed within four tracks: I. European Security Policy; II. Humanitarian Dimension; III. Security, Arms Control and Civil Society; and IV. Information Technology.
