In spite of Islam’s long history in Europe and the growing number of Muslims resident in Europe, little research exists on Muslim pilgrimage in Europe. This collection of eleven chapters is the first systematic attempt to fill this lacuna in an emerging research field. Placing the pilgrims’ practices and experiences centre stage, scholars from history, anthropology, religious studies, sociology, and art history examine historical and contemporary hajj and non-hajj pilgrimage to sites outside and within Europe. Religion and Violence
In this volume, the authors attempt to speak freely about the potential in religions both for violence and peace. I am confident that many impulses from this work will also impact the direction of churches and other religious communities, such that religions, all together, will try to mobilize the members of their communities to actively contribute to world peace. In this way, religions will be perceived as part of the solution for world peace, enabling them to move beyond the stigma of their damaged reputations.
Improving Religious Education Through Teacher Training
This book brings together two topics which have both been of increasing interest in different countries. The first refers to the quality of Religious Education as a school subject (RE) in general, the second is about the education of teachers of RE and its possible contribution to better quality RE. There have been many public, and often controversial, debates concerning both of these topics. The chapters contained in this volume, however, are not meant to continue such debates (even if it is inevitable that they will contribute to these debates as well), but to make use of research, especially research on teacher education in the field of RE, in order to provide insights based not just on political or personal opinions, but on rigorous academic scholarship.
Public Theology Perspectives on Religion and Education
In order to draw out the relationship between publicly-oriented Christianity and education, this book demonstrates that education is an important method and prerequisite of public theology, as well as an urgent object of public theology research’s attention. Featuring work from diverse academic disciplines—including religion education, theology, philosophy, and religious studies—this edited collection also contends with the educational challenges that come with the decline of religion on the one hand and its transformation and regained public relevance on the other. Taken together, the contributions to this volume provide a comprehensive argument for why education deserves systematic attention in the context of public theology discourse, and vice versa.
Pluralisation of Theologies at European Universities
This publication assumes that the modern context of plurality requires universities and higher education to support studying plural religious traditions in depth, giving due consideration to plural religious and secular perspectives, and providing opportunities for interaction between them. There are various ways to realise these aims. Success may be supported (or hindered) by various structures and concepts prevalent in universities or by different schools of thought on the nature of religions, on their relation to each other, and on their place in society. Religions and theologies can be studied in parallel, in cooperation, in dialogue, or through integrative approaches. The differing theoretical positions and contextual conditions (institutional, social, political) within which (inter)religious learning takes place are an important focus of this publication, both for the possibilities they open up and the limitations they pose. This publication builds on the presentations and discussions of scholars participating at a conference at the University of Hamburg in December 2018, with some additional contributions from others in the field who were unable to attend in person.
Pluralism in Islamic Contexts - Ethics, Politics and Modern Challenges
This book brings together international scholars of Islamic philosophy, theology and politics to examine these current major questions: What is the place of pluralism in the Islamic founding texts? How have sacred and prophetic texts been interpreted throughout major Islamic intellectual history by the Sunnis and Shi‘a? Islam, Religions, and Pluralism in Europe

Im Diskurs mit dem Qurʼān
Den Schwerpunkt der Forschungsarbeit bildet die Erarbeitung eines pädagogischen Handlungskonzepts, welches in Anlehnung an das ‚Vier-Faktoren-Modell‘ der Themenzentrierten Interaktion (TZI) nach Ruth Cohn und in Zusammenführung mit den qurʼānischen Offenbarungsanlässen generiert ist. Das Hauptziel des Modells ist es, eine barrierefreie Verbindung zwischen den jugendlichen Lebenswelten und dem Qurʼān zu ermöglichen, ohne eine Versiertheit in den Gebieten der qurʼānischen Wissenschaften vorauszusetzen. Jugendliche sollen auf diesem Wege dazu eingeladen werden, qurʼānische Inhalte aus der eigenen Erfahrungswelt aus zu deuten, zu bewerten und einzuordnen und damit aktiv am Fortschritt einer zeit- und ortsgerechten islamischen Theologie und Religionspädagogik zu partizipieren.
