Integrated Approaches to Peace and Sustainability
This book provides new insights into the development of integrated approaches to peace and sustainability in the era of global change. Since the late 1980s, and in order to regulate the increasingly detrimental impacts of humans on the environment, the transition towards sustainability has been high on the agenda of researchers and policymakers alike. Meanwhile, peace considerations have expanded in recent decades to include the varied types and sources of conflict, from inter-state to intra-state conflicts due to various social, political, economic, and environmental factors. Through providing theoretical and empirical insights, this book demonstrates that sustainability and peace as intrinsically interrelated. The book elaborates on the multi-dimensional and constantly evolving concepts of sustainability and peace. In addition, the book contributes to a better understanding of the complex and dynamic interlinkages between peace and sustainability by presenting examples of pathwayswhere sustainability and peace interact considering the different factors and contexts that are constantly shaping and reshaping the conditions for sustainable and peaceful societies.
Geography of Deprivation
Poverty, Hunger and Malnutrition worldwide are the major focus of this book, taken up as the principal areas of human deprivation with wide geographical variations as determined by different factors. Gender discrimination in its various manifestations and child abuse also feature very prominently as other forms of deprivation corroding life and attitudes of people requiring very serious concern to deal with the prevailing humiliating situation along with an assessment of the earth’s capability of redressing human sufferance through poverty and hunger.
Uneven Development in the Third World
The book defines uneven development in terms of development strategies and their outcomes. Drawing on case-studies from China and India, three types of strategy are discussed: heavy industrialisation, sectoral/regional balance, and economic liberalisation. Also three kinds of outcomes are examined: growth of output and productivity, income, consumption and class inequalities in three spatial dimensions - intra-regional, inter-regional and rural-urban. Furthermore, access to and utilisation of technology, health and educational services are compared.

India and Global Climate Change
Though the impact of climate change will most likely be greatest with the already poor and vulnerable populations in the developing world, much of the writing about the costs and benefits of different policies to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions is by Western scholars, working in advanced industrialized economies. Drawing the majority of its contributions from authors based at Indian universities and other research centers, India and Global Climate Change provides a developing world perspective on the debate. With a population of over one billion, and an economy that is undergoing substantial restructuring and greatly increased economic growth after a number of years of stagnation, India has an exceptional stake in the debate about climate change policy. Using the Indian example, this volume looks at such policy issues as the energy economy relationships that drive GHG emissions; the options and costs for restricting GHG emissions while promoting sustainable development; and the design of innovative mechanisms for expanded international cooperation with GHG mitigation.
Constitutional Remedies in Asia
Many jurisdictions in Asia have vested their courts with the power of constitutional review. Traditionally, these courts would invalidate an impugned law to the extent of its inconsistency with the constitution. In common law systems, such an invalidation operates immediately and retrospectively; and courts in both common law and civil law systems would leave it to the legislature to introduce corrective legislation. In practice, however, both common law and civil law courts in Asia have devised novel constitutional remedies, often in the absence of explicit constitutional or statutory authorisation. Examining cases from Hong Kong, Bangladesh, Indonesia, India, and the Philippines, this collection of essays examines four novel constitutional remedies which have been judicially adopted - Prospective Invalidation, Suspension Order, Remedial Interpretation, and Judicial Directive - that blurs the distinction between adjudication and legislation.
