Isa Genzken
A strikingly original analysis of Isa Genzken’s move towards merging sculptural and architectural morphologies into a trailblazing practice of contemporary assemblage. Fuck the Bauhaus, a series of audacious architectural models for future high-rise buildings in Manhattan, marks a poetic and provocative shift in Isa Genzken’s artistic oeuvre. Made in the year 2000, out of quotidian objects and cheap materials foraged in the streets and stores of New York, these sculptural assemblages depart from the German artist’s ‘post-Minimalist’ works begun in the 1970s. The earlier works conjured the haunting spectres of catastrophe, destruction and failed utopia, as well as the potential for freedom amidst the ruins of post-War reconstruction culture. Analysing Genken’s post–2000 penchant for appropriation, collage and montage, André Rottmann draws on the writings of Deleuze and Guattari, Bruno Latour and other theorists of "assemblage," to show how her ‘late style’ is not a return to (neo-)avant-garde traditions but a powerful reimagining of them for the contemporary moment.
A Class of Their Own
The pioneer group of the Düsseldorf School The ‘Düsseldorf School’ has become a household name in the art world for one of the most successful and influential strains of modern photography. Coined in the late 1980s, the name refers mainly to the pioneer group of students of the late Bernd Becher, who in 1976 became the first professor for creative photography at a German arts academy. His students included Andreas Gursky, Candida Höfer, Axel Hütte, Thomas Ruff, and Thomas Struth, all of them today internationally acclaimed artists in their own right. Whereas ‘Düsseldorf School’ initially was used as a handy term for a group of artists with the same university’s background, it quickly turned into a powerful brand name both in critical and commercial contexts. Despite its welcomed impact on the art scene, the members of the ‘School’ felt rather ambiguous about their perception as a group which turned them into stars but simultaneously risked levelling individual profiles and differences. What exactly connects and distinguishes them aesthetically is for the first time thoroughly explored in Maren Polte’s pioneering study.

Die 1859 als Kind deutscher Eltern in Zürich geborene Ottilie W. Roederstein gehörte zu Lebzeiten zu den führenden Malerinnen im deutschsprachigen Raum. Früh genoss sie auch Anerkennung in Paris. Wie nur wenige Frauen ihrer Zeit widmete sie ihr ganzes Leben erfolgreich der Kunst und führte zusammen mit ihrer Lebenspartnerin, der Gynäkologin Elisabeth H. Winterhalter, in Deutschland ein unkonventionelles, aber angesehenes Dasein. Während sich Roedersteins Frühwerk innerhalb der kunstakademischen Konventionen bewegte, öffnete sich die Malerin in ihrem reiferen Werk zunehmend anderen Strömungen, um in den 1920er-Jahren zu einer sachlich-nüchternen Bildsprache zu finden. Trotz ihrer einst internationalen Wertschätzung als Porträtistin und Malerin von Stillleben geriet Roederstein fast unmittelbar nach ihrem Tod 1937 in Vergessenheit. Nach mehreren Jahrzehnten widmen das Kunsthaus Zürich und das Städel Museum in Frankfurt am Main ihr die erste monografische Werkschau, die dieser umfassende Katalog begleitet.

De/Constituting Wholes
How can the power of wholes be resisted without essentializing their parts? Drawing on different archives and methodologies, including aesthetics, history, biology, affect, race, and queer, the interventions in this volume explore different ways of troubling the consistency and stability of wholes, breaking up their closure and making them more dynamic. Doing so without necessarily presupposing or producing parts, an outside, or a teleological development, they indicate the critical potential of partiality without parts.

Like no other artist, Franz Marc pursued the representation of the horse--a central topic in the fine arts--as his life's work. As a painter and co-founder of the "Blaue Reiter" he created symbolic, visionary images which today stand among the icons of modernism. This publication presents an overview of Marc's paintings, drawings, gouaches and a number of famous postcards--from his nature studies of 1905 and 1906 to the sketches he made on the eve of World War I. During this short period of time, the horse motif became increasingly central, especially after Marc moved from Munich to the secluded upper Bavarian village of Sindelsdorf. With a skill for precise observation and intuitive understanding, Marc attempted an ''animalization of art, '' in which the horse became both subject and expression of the hope for better and more organic existence.
