By Accident or Design

In this reflective autobiography, Rosemary Sassoon, a leading expert on handwriting and typography, looks back on her long and varied career, paying special attention to her unorthodox progression through a variety of fields. She details the route that took her from design to the educational and medical aspects of handwriting problems, then on to research and a PhD and finally to working in the area of legibility in type design. In telling the story of an unusual and unusually successful life, Sassoon takes up a number of philosophical questions about what it is that comes together to form our characters, and what role chance and coincidence play in our lives.

Handwriting Pocketbook

Whether you're teaching novice writers, older children or adults, you'll benefit from Julie Bennett's enthusiasm and expertise. She presents handwriting as both an art and a science. Either way, it can be mastered. Julie covers all bases: teaching, improving and troubleshooting handwriting. Starting with the basics - seating, posture, paper and writing implements - she then fixes the goalposts with a handwriting checklist. This is the reference point for remedying a range of common problems (e.g. uneven spacing between words and letters or inconsistent slope and slant) using Julie's multi-sensory 'Key Notes' method. A chapter on teaching beginner writers moves through the stages of writing from pre-literate to fluency, and a section on solving handwriting problems (e.g. for left-handers or those with dysgraphia or arthritis) is followed by a treasure trove of resources: schemes, aids, software, websites and books. An A-Z of Type Designers

This illustrated A-Z features outstanding type designers from around the world, from Gutenberg to the present day. Arranged alphabetically by designer's name, the book contains over 260 biographical profiles. Entries are illustrated by key typefaces taken from a wide range of sources, including type specimens, original posters, private press editions and magazine covers, and also give a list of work and, where applicable, further reading references and a website address. An essential reference for typographers, graphic designers and students, the book also features a full index and eight short texts by leading typographers - Jonathan Barnbrook, Erik van Blokland, Clive Bruton, John Downer, John Hudson, Jean Francois Porchez, Erik Spiekermann and Jeremy Tankard - that cover a variety of different aspects of type design, including typeface revivals, font piracy, designing fonts for corporate identities and the role of nationality in type design.

Writing as a Visual Art

Tonfoni (linguistics, U. of Bologna, Italy) has published many books in Italian and in English, has been a visiting scholar at MIT and Harvard University, and has presented her methodolgoy in many settings. Here she describes a highly developed approach to writing that quite specifically involves drawing, painting, and visual symbols as a means of representing the structure of various kinds of writing. With these structures in mind, she suggests that students can improve, vary, and significantly expand their writing repertoire. The bibliographic history of this book is somewhat elusive: It is a paperbound edition of a work first published in Britain by Intellect Books (UK), apparently in 1993 (from the date on the author's preface). James Richardson is credited with "abridging" the volume, but the original source volume is not identified (or perhaps it was not published). Marvin Minsky, famed as a founder of artificial intelligence, provides a lengthy foreword. Annotation copyrighted by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR

Throughout this book, Sassoon considers the way in which these different letterforms have a profound and persuasive affect on all of us, that we are distinctly unaware of. For example, the ways in which our handwriting is the reflectance of ourselves on paper and the importance of typography and layout for the atmosphere of a design and how that influences the experience of the reader. Letterforms find their way into everyday life, thus this is a fascinating book for all readers. An essential read for those who are in the creative industry, and a useful guide to those with a career involving letterforms. Beautifully illustrated with examples of calligraphy and lettering - from Rosemary and other script artists.
