The War between Russia and Ukraine
Depending on the global, but also the European context, peace ethical perspectives on the Russian-Ukrainian war differ considerably. While many Northern, Western, Middle and South Eastern European states stress the illegitimacy and illegality of Russia’s invasion in Ukraine according to international law, some European and many states in the global South and East take a different stance. Thus, important international agents like South Africa have abstained from voting on UN resolution A/RES/ES-11/1 (March 2nd, 2022) and also the renewed resolution A/ES-11/L.7 (February 23rd, 2023); Brazil’s president Lula da Silva claims neutrality in the conflict. South African officials understand Russia as a long-standing ally and the conflict as a recalibration of the global order - and they don’t stand alone with that view. This book brings together voices from theology, political science and peace ethics from three continents for an intercontinental public theological and interdisciplinary conversation on peace ethics that takes decolonial perspectives into account without giving up claims of universal validity of human rights.

Space and Place as a Topic for Public Theologies
Public theologies reflect on the contextuality of the Christian religion. Much of this contextuality is dependent on place: place as the culture and the society in which religions are situated, place as the position from where a theologian speaks, place as the biographical contingencies that shape people's lives. Moreover, public theologies ask for the contribution of Christian ethics to society, thereby shaping the social, cultural, and religious space to which they belong. The contributions in this volume analyse the categories of space and place in order to deepen the understanding of contextuality, thereby taking up some of the challenges presented by the so-called "spatial turn". Power in Reformed Polity
In the framework of the international academic dialogue on Reformed church polity this study focuses on the way the notion of authority is articulated in the church orders of three Indonesian churches with different historical and missionary backgrounds. The analysis deals with the main aspects of church polity that would articulate power: identity, assembly, and ministry. It shows resonances between the characteristic features of Reformed polity and the cultural context of Indonesia. Authority can be characterized as context-relevant, relational, and accountable.

Explanation Within the Bounds of Religion
This book deals with the question of whether religious worldviews fulfil an explanatory function in the lives of believers. After rebutting some common objections to this claim, the author proposes to understand the explanatory nature of religious belief along the lines of inference to the best explanation. This proposal is qualified in view of the peculiar nature of religious belief: It is stressed that the type of explanation concerned occurs within the bounds of religion alone, and loses its sense apart from the religious form of life. In unfolding his argument, the author draws heavily on ideas of explanation developed in the philosophy of science, pointing to differences and comparisons between religious and scientific explanations. The author concludes by considering some specific things that theism explains.
Public Theology in Brazil
