Role of the Gut Flora in Toxicity and Cancer examines the relationship between the gut microflora and its host. The aim is to provide a comprehensive view of the contribution of the gut flora to foreign compound metabolism in man and laboratory animals. The object has been to relate this bacterial metabolism to toxic events occurring in mammals and to consider the interrelationships of bacterial and mammalian metabolic pathways. The early chapters are set the scene and provide a background to the sections on metabolism of specific groups of compounds which follow. Subsequent chapters encompass the bacterial metabolism of both xenobiotics and food components, and concentrate on those reactions which have actual or potential toxicological and/or clinical importance. The concluding chapters provide assessments of the role of the gut flora in the etiology of cancer, in particular from the point of view of the formation of carcinogens, mutagens, and promotors within the large bowel.

Bile Acids

Bile acids are increasingly being seen as extremely important carcinogenic agents in cancers of the bile duct, liver, colon, rectum, and oesophagus. They are essential agents involved in lipid digestion and absorption in mammals, however, they also play wide-ranging roles in a variety of disease states ranging from diabetes to cancer. They have evolved exquisite mechanisms for controlling their own synthesis and to ensure that they are produced at correct concentrations and also kept in the correct anatomical environment. It is only when these fine levels of controls are breached that Bile acids become associated with disease. This breaching of control mechanisms can occur through dietary me...

Capturing the growth of the global medical device market in recent years, this practical new guide is essential for all who are responsible for ensuring safety in the use and manufacture of medical devices. It has been extensively updated to reflect significant advances, incorporating combination products and helpful case examples of current real-life problems in the field. The Third Edition explores these key current trends: global device markets continually advancing technology the increasing harmonization of device safety regulation worldwide Each aspect of safety evaluation is considered in terms of International Standards Organization (ISO), US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), European Union (EU), and Japanese Ministry of Health and Welfare (MHW) perspectives. In addition, the book reflects the role of the continuing growth of technology in the incorporation of science, particularly in the areas of immunotoxicology and toxicokinetics.

Long-term and Short-term Assays for Carcinogens

This volume contains the papers presented at a meeting held in December 1985 to review the conduct and use of long- and short- term assays for the detection of chemical carcinogens. The meeting was attended by about 60 experts in the fields of carcinogenesis, mutagenesis, and cell biology. The series of reports on long-term carcinogenicity assays pay particular attention to three topics: the role of pharmacokinetic data, early preneoplastic lesions in carcinogenesis, and the possibility for discerning the relative contribution of carcinogens to various stages of carcinogenesis. The reports on short-term assays summarize, among other points, the principle and scientific basis of each assay and its relevance to carcinogen detection and to the multistage process of carcinogenesis.
