The articles investigate representations in literature, both by the colonizers and colonized. Many deal with the effect the dominant culture had on the self image of native inhabitants. They cover areas on all continents that were colonized by European countries.
Asian Migrations
The migration of people within and beyond Asia no longer takes the form of permanent ruptures, uprooting, and resettlement. Today, such movement is more likely to be transient and complex, ridden with disruptions and detours, and based on translocal interconnections between places and multiple chains of movement. Written from various disciplinary perspectives, this collection of essays explores the migration experiences of a wide spectrum of people, from professional and managerial elites to contract workers and refugees. In addressing the nature of these Asian migrations, the authors demonstrate how mobility in today's world has transformed notions of citizenship and identity, and of displacement and home.
Colonial Visions, Postcolonial Revisions
This book offers reflections of the representations of the Indian diaspora of Malaysia according to two spectrums, colonial and postcolonial. It takes seed from the belief that any engagement with the Indian diasporic experience in Malaysia must take into account the role of the pioneer Indian immigrants who carved the niche of existence for the overseas Indian on Malayan soil. It begins by tracing their presence within the terrain of colonial narratives to uncover, not only the ways in which they were subordinated to colonial ideological discourses but also, and more significantly, the suppressed story of coolie resistance that lies under the weight of such masks of conquest. It then moves on to show how postcolonial revisioning is able to reconstruct the Indian immigrants of Malaya as choreographers of the diasporic identity that they have left as the most significant legacy for contemporary Malaysian Indians. This book ultimately reveals the politics of Malaysian Indian identity from colonised to globalised grounds, and the ways in which the subaltern spaces of the former can be reclaimed and reterritorialised in the latter.

Handbook of Language and Mobility
The Handbook of Language and Mobility challenges the assumption that mobility is a new norm. It maps new developments in language and mobility scholarship, tracing how the mobility of language, people, and knowledge intersects with multiplicity, infrastructures, historicity, new political formations, and processes of world-making. By decentering mobility, this handbook questions which processes come to be recognized as mobile, and how mobility is historically shaped, regulated, valued, and stigmatized. By recentering mobility, it explores its productive dimensions – how it sustains and aligns with celebratory ideologies of globalization, technology, and agency, creates value, and contributes to the management and legitimation of difference and inequality. Mobility here is not just about movement – it shapes time, space, subjectivities, power, and systems of accumulation.
