Expanding Austenland

Expanding Austenland: The Pride and Prejudice Fanfiction Archive explores Jane Austen’s reception in popular culture through an exploration of the ever-expanding terrain of online fanfiction, professionally published (profic) texts, and other intertextual reworkings inspired by the author’s most popular novel, Pride and Prejudice. The book argues that given its pervasiveness, Pride and Prejudice could be usefully considered not as a single novel, but as an entire ‘archive’ of interrelated texts, or as a portal that opens a ‘virtual world’ for readers to expand and explore. By examining the Pride and Prejudice archive of interrelated texts, this book analyses the process through which an individual novel can develop a virtual life, or afterlife. The evolving world that is opened by Pride and Prejudice, and extended and enriched through fanfiction, is conceptualised in the monograph as ‘Austenland’.

Masculinities in Contemporary Science-Fiction Television

Through a comprehensive analysis of popular contemporary science fiction television series, this book underscores the genre's unique potential to both reflect and shape cultural perceptions of masculinity. Each of its essays, written by a host of international contributors, analyse key series ranging from Firefly (2002) to Star Trek: Picard (2020-23). Employing anti-patriarchal and pro-feminist perspectives, they scrutinize the limited diversity among male characters in science fiction television, shedding light on the underrepresentation of non-heteronormative, non-white, and transmasculine characters, while also highlighting notable exceptions such as Altered Carbon (2018-20), Doom Patrol (2019), and The Umbrella Academy (2019). Against the backdrop of current discussions regarding toxic masculinity, this book highlights the ways in which divergent masculinities shape and are shaped by the science fiction genre. In doing so, it argues the significant role played by the genre in ongoing discourse surrounding traditional and alternative forms of masculinity.

Star Wars on Trial: The Force Awakens Edition

Order in the Court! Star Wars: the most significant, powerful myth of the twenty-first century or morally bankrupt military fantasy? Six films. Countless books. $20 billion in revenue. No one can question the financial value or cultural impact of the Star Wars film franchise. But has the impact been for the good? In Star Wars on Trial's courtroom—Droid Judge presiding—Star Wars stands accused of elitist politics and sexism, religious and ethical lapses, the destruction of literary science fiction and science fiction film, and numerous plot holes and logical gaps. Supported by a witness list of bestselling science fiction authors, David Brin (for the prosecution) and Matthew Woodring Stover (for the defense) debate these charges and more before delivering their closing statements. The verdict? That's up to you. Covering the films from A New Hope to The Force Awakens, Brin and Stover provide new forewords that explore the newest generation of Star Wars films and what JJ Abrams must do to live up to—or redeem—the franchise.
