This book celebrates the remarkable contributions of Panos M. Pardalos, offering a comprehensive collection of 19 rigorously peer-reviewed articles that span the breadth of his research interests. From deterministic and stochastic global optimization to combinatorial optimization, this volume provides insights into solving modern applied problems in planning theory, support vector machines, data mining, supply chain optimization, and more. Readers will encounter a diverse array of topics, including Pareto optimality, game and equilibrium theory, vehicle routing problems, energy systems, and financial markets. Each article stands alone in its scientific, methodological, and practical individu...
Have you ever stopped at a construction project on the way to your of?ce and the day’s astrophysics? Remember the other onlookers – folks just enjoying the sp- tacle, as we all do in following developments away from our areas of active work? We are excited and thrilled when the Hubble Space Telescope discovers an Einstein Cross, when the marvelous pulsars enter our lives, and when computer scientists put a little box on our desk that outperforms yesterday’s giant machines. We are free to make use of such achievements and we respect the imagination and discipline needed to bring them about, just as onlookers respect the abilities and planning needed to create a building they may later u...
This book Algebraic Modeling Systems – Modeling and Solving Real World Optimization Problems – deals with the aspects of modeling and solving real-world optimization problems in a unique combination. It treats systematically the major algebraic modeling languages (AMLs) and modeling systems (AMLs) used to solve mathematical optimization problems. AMLs helped significantly to increase the usage of mathematical optimization in industry. Therefore it is logical consequence that the GOR (Gesellschaft für Operations Research) Working Group Mathematical Optimization in Real Life had a second meeting devoted to AMLs, which, after 7 years, followed the original 71st Meeting of the GOR (Gesellsc...
Optimization in Science and Engineering is dedicated in honor of the 60th birthday of Distinguished Professor Panos M. Pardalos. Pardalos’s past and ongoing work has made a significant impact on several theoretical and applied areas in modern optimization. As tribute to the diversity of Dr. Pardalos’s work in Optimization, this book comprises a collection of contributions from experts in various fields of this rich and diverse area of science. Topics highlight recent developments and include: Deterministic global optimization Variational inequalities and equilibrium problems Approximation and complexity in numerical optimization Non-smooth optimization Statistical models and data mining Applications of optimization in medicine, energy systems, and complex network analysis This volume will be of great interest to graduate students, researchers, and practitioners, in the fields of optimization and engineering.
This book consists of a collection of articles describing the emergingand integrated area of Energy,Natural Resourcesand EnvironmentalEconomics.A majority of the authors are researchers doing applied work in economics, nance, and management science and are based in the Nordic countries. These countries have a long tradition of managing natural resources. Many of the applications are therefore founded on such examples. The book contents are based on a workshop that took place during May 15–16, 2008 in Bergen, Norway. The aim of the workshop was to create a meeting place for researchers who are active in the area of Energy, Natural Resource, and En- ronmentalEconomics, andat the same time cel...
Optimization is of critical importance in engineering. Engineers constantly strive for the best possible solutions, the most economical use of limited resources, and the greatest efficiency. As system complexity increases, these goals mandate the use of state-of-the-art optimization techniques. In recent years, the theory and methodology of optimization have seen revolutionary improvements. Moreover, the exponential growth in computational power, along with the availability of multicore computing with virtually unlimited memory and storage capacity, has fundamentally changed what engineers can do to optimize their designs. This is a two-way process: engineers benefit from developments in opt...
This volume constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 9th International Symposium on Experimental Algorithms, SEA 2010, held on Ischia Island, Naples, Italy, in May 2010. The 40 revised full papers presented together with two invited papers were carefully reviewed and selected from 73 submissions. The topics covered include algorithm engineering, algorithmic libraries, algorithmic mechanism design, analysis of algorithms, algorithms for memory hierarchies, approximation techniques, bioinformatics, branch and bound algorithms, combinatorial and irregular problems, combinatorial structures and graphs, communication networks, complex networks, computational geometry, computational learning theory, computational optimization, computer systems, cryptography and security, data streams, data structures, distributed and parallel algorithms, evaluation of algorithms for realistic environments, experimental techniques and statistics, graph drawing, heuristics for combinatorial optimization
This book provides an overview on stochastic optimization and its application in the Energy Industry. Special focus is given on hydro-thermal scheduling and, more generally, storage systems. The book begins by illuminating several approaches to deal with uncertainties (e.g., robust optimization, chance-constraints, stochastic optimization) and discusses their relations, advantages and disadvantages. Special focus is given on GAMS coded examples and the usage of the GAMS software. The book is very suitable for courses in business schools, system engineering, applied mathematics, operations research and energy producing industry.
