Representations of China in Latin American Literature (1987-2016)

An Open Access edition of this book is available on the Liverpool University Press website and the OAPEN library as part of the Opening the Future project with COPIM. Representations of China in Latin American Literature (1987-2016) analyses contemporary Latin American novels in which China is the main theme. Using ‘China’ as a multidimensional term, it explores how the novels both highlight and undermine assumptions about China that have shaped Latin America’s understanding of ‘China’ and shows ‘China’ to be a kind of literary/imaginary ‘third’ term which reframes Latin American discourses of alterity. On one level, it argues that these texts play with the way that ‘Chin...

Re-mapping World Literature

How can we talk about World Literature if we do not actually examine the world as a whole? Research on World Literature commonly focuses on the dynamics of a western center and a southern periphery, ignoring the fact that numerous literary relationships exist beyond these established constellations of thinking and reading within the Global South. Re-Mapping World Literature suggests a different approach that aims to investigate new navigational tools that extend beyond the known poles and meridians of current literary maps. Using the example of Latin American literatures, this study provides innovative insights into the literary modeling of shared historical experiences, epistemological cros...

Inheriting Dance

»Inheriting Dance. An Invitation from Pina« sets out at the historical moment we found ourselves in after the passing of Pina Bausch. The Pina Bausch Foundation started their work of carrying the artistic heritage of dancer and choreographer Pina Bausch into the future. This book reflects discussions and questions aroused by her work: How to archive dance? How to deal with the performative heritage at the outset of the 21st century? How to describe the performativity of remembering? And finally, what is the task of an archive for tomorrow, an archive to serve as a workshop for the future? Furthermore, »Inheriting Dance« provides profound insight into the practical work of the Pina Bausch Foundation, on a local, national and global level, aiming at an archive as a place of transformation, exchange, creative production, and artistic practice, similar to an abundantly growing garden. A place for future generations of dancers, artists, non-professionals, and scholars. Contributions by Salomon Bausch, Stephan Brinkmann, Royd Climenhaga, Katharina Kelter, Gabriele Klein, Sharon Lehner, Keziah Claudine Nanevie, Linda Seljimi, Bernhard Thull, Michelle Urban and Marc Wagenbach.

Visual Culture in Spain and Mexico analyzes films, paintings and museum exhibitions to show how aspects of hispanic visual culture 'manage' or 'mediate' risk, as articulated stylistically and ideologically in the visual artefact. The book is divided into six chapters plus an Introduction. The first three chapters deal with Mexico or more accurately aspects of life in Mexico City; the other three with Spain or more precisely with the Basque Country and aspects of cultural appropriation which include but also exceed Basque cultural politics.

Imported Modernity in Post-colonial State Formation

The present volume analyses the actual processes by which liberal ideas and modern educational and cultural projects traveled to, and were institutionalized in, the Latin American context during the post-independence period. It comprises a number of essays that pay attention to the process of importing specific ideas to particular contexts, and to the peculiar dynamics of that communication. Although diverse in theme and methodological approach, all of the studies that make up this volume focus on the typical features characterizing the selection, appropriation and utilization of imported political discourses and institutions, models of schooling and cultural practices. Each of the contributors follows the circulation and appropriation of specific European «ideas» and «models», and discusses the social and cultural characteristics of the process of communication that shaped that circulation.
