The endocannabinoid system consists of cannabinoid receptors, their endogenous lipid ligands (endocannabinoids) and the enzymatic machinery for their synthesis and degradation. In the brain, endocannabinoids regulate ion channel activity and neurotransmitter release and thereby contribute to various aspects of brain function, including memory, reward and emotions. Their ability to modulate synaptic efficacy has a wide range of functional consequences and provides unique therapeutic possibilities. Unprecedented advances have been made in the understanding of the role of endocannabinoids in the regulation of the emotional brain over the past few years. However, a comprehensive book encompassing all these aspects is still lacking. The book will provide an overview of the role played by the endocannabinoid system in the regulation of emotional processes with particular emphasis on the modulation of memory and reward for emotionally arousing events and for the regulation of motivational aspects in cannabis use.

Autism Spectrum Disorder: New Insights Into Molecular Pathophysiology and Therapeutic Development

This eBook is a collection of articles from a Frontiers Research Topic. Frontiers Research Topics are very popular trademarks of the Frontiers Journals Series: they are collections of at least ten articles, all centered on a particular subject. With their unique mix of varied contributions from Original Research to Review Articles, Frontiers Research Topics unify the most influential researchers, the latest key findings and historical advances in a hot research area! The Cambridge Handbook of Play

Play takes up much of the time budget of young children, and many animals, but its importance in development remains contested. This comprehensive collection brings together multidisciplinary and developmental perspectives on the forms and functions of play in animals, children in different societies, and through the lifespan. The Cambridge Handbook of Play covers the evolution of play in animals, especially mammals; the development of play from infancy through childhood and into adulthood; historical and anthropological perspectives on play; theories and methodologies; the role of play in children's learning; play in special groups such as children with impairments, or suffering political violence; and the practical applications of playwork and play therapy. Written by an international team of scholars from diverse disciplines such as psychology, education, neuroscience, sociology, evolutionary biology and anthropology, this essential reference presents the current state of the field in play research.

During the past years there has been rapid progress in the understanding of how early life stress impacts psychopathology in children. The first two parts of this book present the basic principles of brain development and describe the most important neuronal systems. This includes systems involved in emotion processing, cognitive control, and social processes. These first two general sections are followed by an overview about recent research on various neuronal and psychiatric disorders, where environmental exposures and altered brain development play an important role: sleep, autism, ADHD and other developmental forms of psychopathology.

Handbook of Endocannabinoid Function in the Central Nervous System

Handbook of Endocannabinoid Function in the Central Nervous System, a new release in the Handbook of Behavioral Neuroscience series, offers a comprehensive, interdisciplinary approach to understanding the role of the endocannabinoid system in functions of the central nervous system. This new volume brings together the most influential and internally recognized experts in the field to provide a detailed overview of the physiological and pathophysiological roles of endocannabinoids in CNS activity. It covers the history, functional anatomy, and neurophysiology of the endocannabinoid system, moving on to assess endocannabinoid roles across human lifespans, and in behavioral control.Final sectio...

Innovative approaches and therapeutic perspectives for early-onset neurodevelopmental disorders: from bench to bedside.

In partnership with the Jacques Monod Conference “Genetics, environment, signaling & synaptic plasticity in developmental brain disorders: from bench to bedside", the Frontiers in Neuroscience Journal announces an article collection that will highlight cutting-edge research presented at the 2022 meeting from Monday 11th Apr - Friday 15th Apr in Roscoff (Brittany). Neurodevelopmental Disorders (NDDs) are a highly heterogeneous group of disorders with a prevalence of 3% of the worldwide population. These disorders include Intellectual Disability (ID), autism spectrum disorder (ASD), attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, specific learning disorder, motor and language disorder, schizophren...
