Bulgarian Literature as World Literature
Bulgarian Literature as World Literature examines key aspects and manifestations of 20th- and 21st-century Bulgarian literature by way of the global literary landscape. The first volume to bring together in English the perspectives of prominent writers, translators, and scholars of Bulgarian literature and culture, this long-overdue collection identifies correlations between national and world aesthetic ideologies and literary traditions. It situates Bulgarian literature within an array of contexts and foregrounds a complex interplay of changing internal and external forces. These forces shaped not only the first collaborative efforts at the turn of the 20th century to insert Bulgarian literature into the world's literary repository but also the work of contemporary Bulgarian diaspora authors. Mapping histories, geographies, economies, and genetics, the contributors assess the magnitudes and directions of such forces in order to articulate how a distinctly national, "minor" literature--produced for internal use and nearly invisible globally until the last decade--transforms into world literature today.

Constructing Chinese Literature in the Twentieth Century
This book examines how Chinese thinkers and writers drew on foreign literature between 1918 and 1958 in order to construct China's independent cultural identity. By covering work by authors such as Lu Xun, Yuan Shu, Zhou Libo, Bing Xin, Ding Lin, Guo Xiaochuan, Ye Junjian, and others, this book shows how twentieth-century Chinese literature was shaped by transnational intellectual forces and movements such as imperialism, Asian regionalism, internationalism, and cosmopolitanism. While many studies on modern Chinese literature have remained within the confines of national history, this study analyses key literary writings and translations carried out by modern Chinese writers to demonstrate that the process of establishing China's nation-state is also the process of establishing China's interconnection to the world. This book also aims to show how foreign literary resources were borrowed, translated, mediated, and transformed in China in the period.

It considers literature, along with all other cultural elements, as both formed by and constitutive of a region’s, nation’s, or continent’s global position. The book opens with a chapter discussing the general relation between geopolitics and world literature.
