Long described as lost, this report was the result of Mao Zedong's investigation in 1930 of the people, economy, society and history of the obscure rural county of Xunwu in South China. An extraordinary document that far exceeds in scope and depth Mao's other investigative reports on rural China, the report is a rich source of information on rural administration, commerce, transportation, communication, education, land tenure, taxation, religion, diverse social relations and practices and struggle in one obscure area that was a microcosm of China. Thompson has translated and presented Mao's report with extensive notes. The book is designed to be accessible to non-specialists, and it will be welcomed by those interested in the Chinese countryside, comparative revolution and historical anthropology. Because Mao's report on Xunwu was part of a revolutionary programme, the report raises complex questions about academic and activist readings of social realities.

Wu Hufan was one of the most important experts of Chinese art in the early 20th century. He inscribed famous calligraphy and paintings with art commentaries (colophons). This book presents his biography and a critical discussion of his annotations on art in English language for the first time.
Briefly reviews the educational legacy of imperial China, then traces the movement for private education from its beginning in the middle of the 19th century to the resurgence in post-Mao China. He includes Catholic and Protestant mission schools as well as other non- governmental schools. Deng describes educators as heroic figures and fills gaps in the record with laudatory comments. The goal of this monograph is to complicate the postmodernist argument that art is always already political and does so by studying literary realism as practiced by American and Chinese writers, utilizing the perspective of Michel Foucault. It performs a careful reading of Henry James's The Portrait of a Lady and The Princess Casamassima, William Dean Howell's A Hazard of New Fortunes, and The World of Chance, Liu Binyan's People or Monster? and Sound is Better Than Silence and Zhang Xianliang's Half Man is Woman and Getting Used to Dying. It demonstrates that both sets of realist writers provide interpretive presentations of social realities in order to dismantle cultural appearances (the gospel of wealth, social Darwinism, political liberalism, party purity and historical progress).

This book examines the complex relationship between art and politics in the People's Republic of China between 1949 and 1984. It focuses in particular on three important facets of this relationship, namely, the organizational structure of China's art establishment, the ideological framework for directing creative activity, and the political movement as a key method for periodically ensuring that artists follow the current official line.
