De Gruyter Handbook of Media Psychology

This book presents a survey of contemporary research investigating the psychological processes related to media consumption. As a rapidly growing and changing sub-discipline of mass communication, Media Psychology analyzes how media facilitate communication and how communication, in turn, shapes attitudes, emotions, and behavior. The handbook addresses leading ideas and debates in media psychology, persisting lines of inquiry and new areas of interest. Adopting an organizational approach that embraces a dynamic systems perspective, the book is subdivided into sections that examine nested components of the larger system in question, such as audiences, messages, content and context, while also acknowledging that they do not function in isolation.

The Authenticity Industries

In recent decades, authenticity has become an American obsession. It animates thirty years' worth of reality TV programming and fuels the explosive virality of one hot social media app after another. It characterizes Donald Trump's willful disregard for political correctness (and proofreading) and inspires multinational corporations to stake activist claims in ways that few "woke" brands ever dared before. It buttresses a multibillion-dollar influencer industry of everyday folks shilling their friends with #spon-con and burnishes the street cred of rock stars and rappers alike. But, ironically, authenticity's not actually real: it's as fabricated as it is ubiquitous. In The Authenticity Indu...

"Binge and Bingeability: The Antecedents and Consequences of Binge Watching Behavior examines how the television industry has transformed over time to create the circumstances in which binge watching as a mass behavior can emerge, and what role audiences have played in the rising prevalence of this behavior. Arienne Ferchaud, recognizing that this behavior did not spring, fully formed, from streaming services, ties cultural approaches to binge watching with media psychology-oriented theories, including the concept of "bingeability"--The likelihood that a specific sow will be binge watched--alongside the psychological impacts binge watching may have on viewers over time. Scholars of media studies, television studies, sociology, cultural studies, and psychology will find this book particularly useful."

In video games, complicated stories which can branch in multiple ways are possible, giving the player a great sense of control over the story. The present study's purpose was twofold: to explore the influence of individual differences on moral choice and to determine how choice and morality interact to affect narrative engagement and entertainment appraisals (i.e., enjoyment and appreciation). A 2 (choice vs. no choice) X 2 (moral vs. immoral) experiment was conducted utilizing a modified version of a video game to examine the role of moral choice. Results indicated that very few individuals preferred the bad option when given a choice. Although there were no significant differences found be...
