Poetry can be for individual pleasure, just like any art form can be – following the individual heart and the artist’s whims and fancies and then the world is free to accept or reject it. Even in that, there is something of society that the artist creates. No work of art exists in a vacuum. The common lament is that there are not enough poets and too many politicians. But it is equally true that there are poets lurking in every hidden corner of a home- waiting to be discovered. We aren’t a Dead Poet’s society-not yet! That itself should give any country or culture hope. This is what essentially made us at Cocoa Butter come up with the idea of a poetry competition that would result in an anthology!

It argues that deciphering khayal bandishes as cultural symbols provides an understanding of the constitution of medieval Indian society and shows how society gets represented via such symbols. The author examines the cultural forces that nurtured the context of compositions by Sadarang and Adarang. She touches upon the cultural exchanges between Hindu and Muslim communities through scholarly and philosophical discourses to create a rationale for khayal as a syncretic form of art.
