The Renaissance Nude

  • Categories: Art

A gloriously illustrated examination of the origins and development of the nude as an artistic subject in Renaissance Europe Reflecting an era when Europe looked to both the classical past and a global future, this volume explores the emergence and acceptance of the nude as an artistic subject. It engages with the numerous and complex connotations of the human body in more than 250 artworks by the greatest masters of the Renaissance. For centuries, the relation between lay piety and academic theology has determined the faith of lay people as well as developments in theology, and influenced daily life as well as scholarly discussions. In this book an international and multidisciplinary panel of specialists, covering the fields of church history, history of literature, music history, book history, and art history reflects on a broad range of research topics, providing a fascinating and refreshing view on what this relation has been throughout the centuries. Christoph Burger has given a major impulse to the research into the history of theology, notably the issue of adapting academic theology for lay people. The contributions to this Festschrift reflect this broad spectrum of correlations between learned theology and lay piety from the Early Church period until modern times. The book contains contributions to the research on lay piety as well as academic theology in the Middle Ages, Reformation, and the modern period, as well as their representations in such media as printed books and woodcuts. The result is a truly epoch-transcending and interdisciplinary volume.

Design's Dilemma between Art and Problem-Solving

The design dilemma is based on the historic separation of design and art since the late Middle Ages. It describes the transformation of design from an art discipline to a problem-solving discipline. On the one hand, this great divergence is accompanied by myths that construct opposites of free art and unfree design, of aura and loss of aura, or of distance and touch. On the other hand, the avant-gardes have often invoked the unity of art and design, which museums or marketing also take up again today. In order to better understand design's wandering between art and non-art, its 600-year history of ideas is now traced for the first time in the fields of art and industrial history as well as the philosophy of pragmatism since about 1900. Special attention is paid to the original ideas and their overformation by technicism, capitalism, functionalism or Darwinism. They create the design dilemma that shapes the "attitude" of its actors.

An original and valuable intervention in the fast-growing field of feminist and new art histories, Nancy Spero, Encounters offers a sophisticated interpretation of the work of a highly original and under-represented woman artist. The study proposes a new model of comparatism within the field of visual studies, mirroring and complementing Spero's dialogic manner of working. Basing her analyses on extensive research and multiple face-to-face interviews with the artist, Joanna Walker examines how a selection of the artists and art forms Spero cited offer significant points of comparison with her work. Walker presents Spero's encounters with the art of Ana Mendieta; with the poetry of the Americ...
