Food Justice Activism and Pedagogies: Literacies and Rhetorics for Transforming Food Systems in Local and Transnational Contexts brings together national and transnational scholars from rhetoric, composition, writing studies, and other interdisciplinary fields to address food as a topic of inquiry and a matter of social and environmental justice. The contributors in this edited collection demonstrate that analyzing the literacies, rhetorics, and pedagogies needed to transform food systems is vital to creating sustainable food systems. Making Writing Matter
In Making Writing Matter, Ann M. Feldman explores how changing scholarship at engaged metropolitan universities offers an opportunity to redesign first-year writing classes in ways that make students better writers. An engaged university commits to a relationship with its surrounding metropolitan area, with faculty members undertaking collaborative research with community partners. The more vibrant, participatory role of an engaged university allows students to link their academic studies to important public issues and gain real-world writing experience, such as writing press releases and letters to organizations. This newly focused and contextualized research and scholarship at engaged universities shows students how discourse and writing matter in new ways.
Rhetoric and Technical Communication in HOPE VI
Rhetoric and Technical Communication in HOPE VI presents a rhetorical analysis of key documents and technical writing associated with HOPE VI, a federal mixed-income, public housing program. Despite mandating resident participation, HOPE VI increased homelessness, reinforced racial segregation, and facilitated gentrification projects that priced out low-income residents. Christopher J. Morris considers this phenomenon of participatory capture, in which participation works against the most vulnerable participants. By articulating participatory capture in contemporary American housing, Morris articulates the dominant narratives, discourses, and methods the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development used to leverage participatory methods and discourses to maintain social inequity. In exploring participation’s pitfalls, the author also offers scholars and practitioners alike an alternative to participation: sovereign design rhetoric.
