Monitoring Pandemic Preparedness

How well are countries prepared for the next pandemic? And how to measure and evaluate pandemic preparedness? In this book, Carolin Mezes examines how the practice of pandemic preparedness monitoring has become an important feature of global health security governance – and how the COVID-19 pandemic has revealed its failure. By way of document analysis and an ethnographic case study of the Joint External Evaluations, her study considers the well-rehearsed critique that preparedness monitoring cannot »predict« pandemic response performance and appears as a hollow paperwork exercise of box-ticking. An analysis of the media-technologies of preparedness monitoring gives nuance to these criti...

Lemke offers the most comprehensive and systematic account of Michel Foucault's work on power and government from 1970 until his death in 1984. He convincingly argues, using material that has only partly been translated into English, that Foucault's concern with ethics and forms of subjectivation is always already integrated into his political concerns and his analytics of power. The book also shows how the concept of government was taken up in different lines of research in France before it gave rise to "governmentality studies" in the Anglophone world. A Critique of Political Reason: Foucault's Analysis of Modern Governmentality provides a clear and well-structured exposition that is theoretically challenging but also accessible for a wider audience. Thus, the book can be read both as an original examination of Foucault's concept of government and as a general introduction to his "genealogy of power".

Feeling Dis-ease in Modern History

This book explores experiences of illness, broadly construed. It encompasses the emotional and sensory disruptions that attend disease, injury, mental illness or trauma, and gives an account of how medical practitioners, experts, lay authorities and the public have felt about such disruptions. Considering all sides of the medical encounter and highlighting the intersection of intellectual history and medical knowledge, of institutional atmospheres, built environments and technological practicalities, and of emotional and sensory experience, Feeling Dis-ease in Modern History presents a wide-ranging affective account of feeling well and of feeling ill. Especially occupied with the ways in whi...

Global Health in Crisis?

This book examines global health as a foreign policy issue in Germany, exploring its entanglement with security and economic concerns. Based on an ethnography at the German Federal Foreign Office (FFO) during Covid-19, it explores the emergence of this policy field, its variations in the pandemic moment, and the coordination of vaccine donations as a case study. With global health as a growing concern for governments’ security and foreign policies and a corresponding academic interest in these developments, this book offers detailed insights into the German context. Germany has been denoted a latecomer but increasingly important actor in global health – and this book focuses on the assem...

Suspect Families is the first book to investigate the social, political, and ethical implications of parental testing for family reunification in immigration cases. Drawing on policy documents, legal frameworks, case study material and interviews with representatives of governmental and non-governmental organisation and immigration authorities, immigration lawyers, geneticists and applicants for family reunification, the book analyses the different political regimes and social arrangements in which DNA analysis is adopted for decision-making on family reunification in three distinct European countries: Austria, Finland and Germany. Interdisciplinary in scope, the book reconstructs the proces...

Collecting Seeds, Assembling Worlds

How has the world lost three quarters of its crop diversity in less than a century? How does a collection of seeds frozen in the Arctic help face this loss and ensure future food security? And how can Indigenous knowledges and artistic interventions inspire modes of dealing with agrobiodiversity loss that respond to contemporary socio-ecological transformations with care rather than techno-salvationism? Franziska von Verschuer traces these questions from the world's stronghold against agrobiodiversity loss, the Svalbard Global Seed Vault, to divergent worlds and modes of world-making it assembles along with seeds. This study shows that the future is more open than the popular story of the ›doomsday vault‹ suggests.

Ecologies of Disease Control

Ecologies of Disease Control explores the relationship between ecological conceptions of epidemics and forms of infectious disease control. Bringing historical, sociological, anthropological, and geographical case studies from the late eighteenth century to the present into dialogue, contributors unearth a multiplicity of spatial configurations in governing epidemics, putting contemporary health security regimes into historical perspective. Emerging infectious diseases—HIV/AIDS, malaria, tuberculosis, influenza, SARS, West Nile virus, Marburg virus—and the threat they posed to national security and geopolitical order have incentivized the development of global health security initiatives...
