This new collection of papers from leading experts provides an overview of cutting-edge research in Old World zooarchaeology. The research presented here spans various areas across Europe, Western Asia and North Africa – from the Mediterranean to the Atlantic. Several chapters focus on Iberia, but the eastern Mediterranean and Britain are also featured. Thematically, the book covers many of the research areas where zooarchaeology can provide a significant contribution. These include animal domestication, bone modifications, fishing, fowling, economic and social status, as well as adaptation and improvement. The investigation of these topics is carried out using a diversity of approaches, t...

Cattle and People

This volume originates in a conference session that took place at the 2018 International Council of Archaeozoology conference in Ankara, Turkey, entitled "Humans and Cattle: Interdisciplinary Perspectives to an Ancient Relationship." The aim of the session was to bring together zooarchaeologists and their colleagues from various other research fields working on human cattle interactions over time. The contributions in this volume reflect well the breadth of work being undertaken on the ancient relationship between humans and cattle across the continents of Europe, Africa and Asia, and from the late Pleistocene to postmedieval period. Almost all involve the study of archaeological cattle remains and use different zooarchaeological methods, but the combination of these approaches with that of ethnography, isotopes and genetics is also featured. A Rosetta Key for Neolithic History: Birth of Phasing

  • Categories: Art

This work extends the author's generational phasing model into the Neolithic, using Çatalhöyük as a prime example. By applying the "Triadic Generation" unit of 45 years—child, adult, and elder—Susko reconstructs the settlement's unfolding from its obscure pre-XII beginnings (~7500 BCE) to its peak and eventual dispersal (~5900 BCE). Drawing on archaeological reports, stratigraphic layers, figurines, plaster renewal, imported materials, and symbolic motifs, the study identifies successive cultural phases—emergence, establishment, flourishing, crisis, and universalization. The narrative highlights not only material evidence (floors, walls, burials, figurines, obsidian mirrors, imported palm leaves, shells, textiles) but also the hidden drama of history: the fragile moments when cultures may take root or vanish. By situating Çatalhöyük within a broader generational framework, the book provides a Rosetta key for comparing Neolithic developments with later historical patterns.

The Birth and Unfolding of Phases in History

The Birth and Unfolding of Phases in History: From Neolithic to World, Pueblo, and U.S. History brings together four major works into a single arc of human time. Michael A. Susko argues that the rhythm of history is not confined to the rise of empires, but begins in the Neolithic with triadic (45-year) generations that set the first phases of historical time in motion. Using this framework, the book explores: Neolithic Çatalhöyük as a non-empire model of symbolic and generational phasing. (This Initial work is in progress.) World history through Egypt, Judah-Israel, Rome, and the Medieval-Modern era, contrasting empire-based and prophetic alternatives. Ancestral Pueblo history as a more e...

This volume provides the most up-to-date and holistic but compact account of the peopling of the world from the perspective of language, genes and material culture, presenting a view from the Himalayas. The phylogeny of language families, the chronology of branching of linguistic family trees and the historical and modern geographical distribution of language communities inform us about the spread of languages and linguistic phyla. The global distribution and the chronology of spread of Y chromosomal haplogroups appears closely correlated with the spread of language families. New findings on ancient DNA have greatly enhanced our understanding of the prehistory and provenance of our biological ancestors. The archaeological study of past material cultures provides yet a third independent window onto the complex prehistory of our species.

In this book, Nicolas Delsol compares zooarchaeological and material evidence from sites across Mesoamerica and the Caribbean to show how the introduction of cattle, beginning with imports by Spanish colonizers in the 1500s, shaped colonial American society.
