Five decades of independence have produced dramatic increases in womens’ educational achievements in India; but education for girls beyond a certain level is still perceived as socially risky. Based on ethnographic data and historical documents, this book explores the origins of that paradox. Contributors probe the complex relationships between traditional Indian social institutions the joint family, arranged marriage, dowry, and purdah, or sexual segregation and girls schooling. They find that a patrifocal family structure and ideology are often at the root of different family approaches to educating sons and daughters, and that concern for marriageability still plays a central role in womens’ educational choices and outcomes.

Complex Networks

The Up-to-Date Guide to Complex Networks for Students, Researchers, and Practitioners Networks with complex and irregular connectivity patterns appear in biology, chemistry, communications, social networks, transportation systems, power grids, the Internet, and many big data applications. Complex Networks offers a novel engineering perspective on these networks, focusing on their key communications, networking, and signal processing dimensions. Three leading researchers draw on recent advances to illuminate the design and characterization of complex computer networks and graph signal processing systems. The authors cover both the fundamental concepts underlying graph theory and complex netwo...

Options for Exchange Rate Policy

The exchange rate is a vital pillar of macroeconomic management. During the recent Asian crises many analysts argued that otherwise sound economic management in east and southeast Asian countries was undermined by deficiences in exchange rate policies. An appropriate policy has to take into account the size, structural features and openness of the economy. It has to be consistent with monetary and fiscal policies and factor in the implications of policy evolution in major trading partners, particularly in the case of the least developed countries which have close trade and investment links with a large neighbouring country. This publication is the final output of a project for the benefit of selected least developed countries in the region. Country studies for Bangladesh, Bhutan, Cambodia, the Lao People's Democratic Republic, and Nepal are included.

Recovery and Sustainability in East Asia

This paper analyzes the macroeconomic adjustment from the crisis in East Asia in a broad international prospective. The stylized pattern from the previous 160 currency crisis episodes over the period from 1970 to 1995 shows a V-type adjustment of real GDP growth in the years prior to and following a crisis. The adjustment shows a much sharper V-type in the crisis episodes with the IMF program, compared to those without. Cross-country regressions show that depreciation of real exchange rate, expansionary macroeconomic policies and favorable global environments are critical for the speedy post-crisis recovery. In this sense, the East Asian process of adjustment is not much different from the s...
