Transformative Museum Experiences
Following on the volume Museum Experience Design (2018), this book acknowledges the changing role of museums in society with a focus on designing experiences as vehicles for transformation. We look at transformation through a systemic perspective, anchored in the experience that museums offer to visitors. One facet of our exploration regards the museum experience itself as an instrument for change. At this level we conceptualise what we mean by a transformative experience and look at design approaches specifically geared towards inducing transformation. We then turn attention towards the way recent changes in the socio-political and cultural context reverberated in structural and functional changes inside the museum and connected institutions and communities, with shifting museum identities and new forms of cooperation emerging. Finally, we zoom in on the role of technology in the making of transformative museum experiences, looking at opportunities and affordances but also calling for an ethical approach to integration of technology in museum practice.
History, Practice and Pedagogy
This edited volume explores the historical, practical and pedagogical possibilities for expressing and cultivating empathy through works of art. While aspects of what we today recognize as empathy has nestled in the artistic experiences and philosophies of all ages, the subjective and elusive nature of empathic responses has often resulted in the relegation of empathy to the margins of art historical inquiry. Moving into the second quarter of the twenty-first century, amidst global health crises, civic unrest, political turmoil, and persistent social inequities and injustices, this capacity to feel with and as someone or something outside of ourselves is more critical than ever. Probing the very notion of empathy, contributions address themes ranging from environmental and social justice to identity and inclusion to transdisciplinary pedagogies and practices, each with a critical eye to how works of art not only appeal to empathic sensibilities, but might play an active role in developing capacities for empathy in viewers.
Interdisciplinarity in the Scholarly Life Cycle

Water Imagery in George Sand’s Work
This collection of essays highlights the importance of water imagery in the work of the renowned nineteenth-century French female author George Sand. It provides a complex picture of the polyvalent presence of water in Sand’s work that encompasses life and death imagery, ecocriticism, fluid kinship, homosocial ties, and artistic creativity. Drawing on Gaston Bachelard’s premise that the substance of water carries deep meaning, the articles in this volume explore the element of water and its symbolism in a selection of George Sand’s writings and art work, from her most famous novels (Indiana, Lélia, and Consuelo) to her later works, short stories, plays, and autobiographical writing (Teverino, Jean de la Roche, Les Maîtres sonneurs, La Reine Coax, L’Homme de neige, Le Drac, Un Hiver à Majorque, Marianne), and dendrite paintings.
Cultures of Participation
