Archaeology: Historiography and Theory

This book examines our understanding of the ways in which we produce and consume archaeological knowledge and proposes that this should play a greater role in our attempts to describe and comprehend the nature and purpose of archaeology, and the nature of archaeological knowledge. During the past fifty years prehistoric archaeologists have sought to promote or oppose several redefinitions of archaeological goals and approaches that have emphasized, variously, the liberating or constraining power of critical self-reflection. While practitioners have continued to expand the storehouse of archaeological data, they have also been engaged in active investigation of archaeological goals and approa...

What can you learn about the impact of war on archaeology and museums in past conflicts such as World War II? What was the role of state authorities in protecting antiquities in some European contexts? This volume assesses a variety of targeted, vital case studies providing genuine and fresh data (even unpublished pictures and archival records). For instance, contributions detail on the military requisition of the National Museum of Naples, the burial of artefacts in the National Museum of Athens basement, a little-known military excavation in Milazzo (Sicily), 'wararchaeology' of Crete and the rescue of war remains in Finnish Lapland.

Medieval Europe From Another Angle

Medieval Europe From Another Angle

The history of East Central, Southeastern and Eastern Europe may be considered as alternating between a Marxist emphasis on rigid differences between Antiquity and the Middle Ages, largely derived from distinctive modes of production, and a preoccupation with borders, ethnicity, and personalities. This volume examines a number of economic problems that highlight the limits of the current interpretative models, such as the existence of markets or the relation between trade and gift-giving, largely on the basis of the archaeological evidence from the eastern parts of the European continent. In addition, four other chapters address critically such issues as the images of Charlemagne in East Central Europe and of the Vlachs in the French crusade chronicles, linear frontiers, as well as the significance of St. Christopher in Teutonic Prussia. Medieval Europe from Another Angle will appeal to scholars and students alike studying Late Antiquity and the early Middle Ages with an interest in material culture and its use in building ethnic boundaries. It covers a wide geographical area—from Iberia to the Baltic region.

National-Socialist Archaeology in Europe and its Legacies

This edited volume is dedicated to national-socialist archaeology as a Europe-wide phenomenon. It analyses national-socialist attempts to denationalize the archaeologies of European nations by creating a new unifying European archaeology on a racial basis. From the beginning of the nineteenth century, archaeology began to develop into an important force behind processes of nation building. At the same time, structures of transnational academic collaboration contributed strongly to the internal dynamics of the research field, which was primarily organized on a national basis. In those European countries that were confronted with national-socialist occupation and repression between 1939 and 19...
