Chronicling the last radical architectural group of the twentieth century – NATØ (Narrative Architecture Today) – who emerged from the Architectural Association at the start of the 1980s, this book explores the group’s work which echoed a wider artistic and literary culture that drew on the specific political, social and physical condition of 1980s London. It traces NATؒs identification with a particular stream of post-punk, postmodern expression: a celebration of the abject, an aesthetic of entropy, and a do-it-yourself provisionality. NATØ has most often been documented in reference to Nigel Coates (the instigator of NATØ), which has led to a one-sided, one-dimensional record of NATؒs place in architectural history. This book sets out a more detailed, contextual history of NATØ, told through photographs, drawings, and ephemera, restoring a truer polyvocal narrative of the group’s ethos and development.

This book is an attempt to comprehend the reasons for modernity in the Balkans, beginning with the famous Journey to the East undertaken by Charles-Édouard Jeanneret in 1911; a journey during which the future Le Corbusier was the first to appreciate the originality of the region’s architecture. However, the modernity that developed after the Second World War would not have existed without the figure of Josip Broz Tito. With political and cultural acumen, this partisan and charismatic leader of Yugoslavia promoted a process of “socialist modernisation” that looked both east and west, while holding fast to a faith in a political ideology interpreted with freedom and originality. Le Corbusier and Tito are therefore the two central figures of this book. While there is no direct relationship between them, this book presents a series of intersecting relations, beginning with the interpretation of Yugoslavia’s cities and architecture, to trace a path that gives this region an unquestionably central position in the international architectural panorama of the twentieth century.

Mediated Messages presents a collection of original writing exploring the role played by the media in the development of postmodern architecture in the 1970s and 80s. The book's twelve chapters and case-studies examine a range of contemporary periodicals and exhibitions to explore their role in the postmodern. This focus on mediation as a key feature of architectural post-modernism, and the recognition that post-modernism grew out of developments in the media, opens up the possibility of an important new account of post-modernism distinct from existing narratives. Accompanied by a contextualizing introduction, the essays are arranged across four thematic sections (covering: images; international postmodernisms; high and low culture; and postmodern architects as theorists) and present a range of case-studies with a genuinely international scope.
