Culture and Civilization

Volume three of Culture & Civilization continues a pattern in this annual series of dealing with major themes of the past, with a strong sense of how the everyday world of the second decade of the twenty-first century impacts cultural history and civilizations pushing up against each other. A constant theme throughout is the immediate impact of Globalism: in economics, government, manners, styles, egalitarianism in political demands, and terrorism as a response to democratic systems. Each in its own way has coalesced to bring discourse on civilization levels back into vogue. Global issues in size, scope, and scenario are herein placed on exhibition once again. The relationship between ageing and crime has been a much neglected issue, the focus rather being on youth. This books aims to redress this imbalance, bringing together a group of leading authorities to address key issues on the subject of crime and ageing, considering older people as both victims and perpetrators of crime, and looking too at conditions faced by older prisoners. The book draws upon both criminology and gerontology, as well as sociology and social policy, to help understand the complex relationship between ageing and the criminal justice system, and argues that the needs of elders must be far more firmly on the penal policy agenda than is the case currently. Ageing, Crime and Society will be concerned with 'unsilencing' a group who because of their age and status have been muted by the criminal justice system.

Who Pays the Price?

Why is labour migration an issue of such public, social and political concern? How did it acquire such an importance? This book deals with exploitation on a massive scale. It is estimated that there are roughly 20 to 30 million unauthorised migrants world-wide, comprising 10%-15% of the world's immigrant stock. The book focuses on migrant workers, accompanied by as many dependants, who are driven by circumstances beyond their control to work in a country other than their own, in a foreign society that cannot function without them. Most countries admit only a limited number of labour immigrants to meet their labour market needs and priorities. The papers presented in this book cover a wide ra...
