Technology is growing at an exponential rate vis-à-vis humanity’s ability to control it. Moreover, the numerous ethical issues that technology raises are also troubling. These statements, however, may be alarmist—since Telus would tell us “The Future is Friendly”. The Modernist vision of the future was utopic, for instance Star Trek of the 1960s. But postmodern views, such as are found in Blade Runner 2049, are dystopic. Theology is in a unique interdisciplinary position to deal with the many issues, pro and con, that technology raises. Even theologians like Origen in the third century and Aquinas in the thirteenth century made forays into Artificial Intelligence and surrounding iss...

Journal of Biblical and Theological Studies, Issue 9

The Journal of Biblical and Theological Studies (JBTS) is an academic journal focused on the fields of Bible and Theology from an inter-denominational point of view. The journal is comprised of an editorial board of scholars that represent several academic institutions throughout the world. JBTS is concerned with presenting high-level original scholarship in an approachable way. Academic journals are often written by scholars for other scholars. They are technical in nature, assuming a robust knowledge of the field. There are fewer journals that seek to introduce biblical and theological scholarship that is also accessible to students. JBTS seeks to provide high-level scholarship and research to both scholars and students, which results in original scholarship that is readable and accessible. As an inter-denominational journal JBTS is broadly evangelical. We accept contributions in all theological disciplines from any evangelical perspective. In particular, we encourage articles and book reviews within the fields of Old Testament, New Testament, Biblical Theology, Church History, Systematic Theology, Practical Theology, Philosophical Theology, Philosophy, and Ethics.

Theology and the Films of Christopher Nolan

This work of theological film criticism provides an analysis of filmmaker Christopher Nolan's entire filmography, from Following (1998) to Oppenheimer (2023). Though his films are noticeably lacking in representations of religion or references to God, Nolan's postsecular cinema is nevertheless worthy of our theological consideration, as it contains valuable theological and philosophical insights. Indeed, this is the central claim of Theology and the Films of Christopher Nolan: Christopher Nolan's films can and should be considered works of cinematic philosophical theology-they are doing theology and philosophy through the medium of film as they explore what it means to be human in relation to the transcendent. This book identifies the deep parallels and resonances between Nolan's films and the works of philosopher Paul Ricoeur and theologian St. Augustine. Like Nolan's cinema, Theology and the Films of Christopher Nolan is both intellectually stimulating and highly accessible, satisfying the interests of both scholars and popular audiences alike.

American Religious History

A mix of thematic essays, reference entries, and primary source documents covering the role of religion in American history and life from the colonial era to the present. By analyzing religion's interaction with American culture and prominent religious leaders and ideolo...

Let Justice Flow Like Water

Edited by Joshua M. Greever, D. A. Horton, and Justin McLendon, Let Justice Flow Like Water addresses the strained relationship between social justice, the gospel, and the mission of the church. In response to the misuse of Scripture to promote personal ends, the volume reorients the conversation around justice and centers it in the biblical text and its theological implications. The authors provide practical wisdom and points of application to pastors, ministry leaders, and students. The authors examine the most-frequently cited texts on biblical justice through a coherent biblical and systematic-theological method. The result is a glimpse into God's heart for justice and his desire for hum...
