Water Resources in the Middle East

Israeli-Palestinian Water Issues – From Conflict To Cooperation This book Israeli-Palestinian Water Issues- From Conflict to Coope- tion authored by a group of leading Palestinian, Israeli and international water experts is a unique and timely document illustrating the imp- tance of mutual understanding, respect and amity among peoples d- ing a difficult period of stress, whose leaders, sadly, have not yet found the way of resolving the conflicts between them and of living in peace with each other. Nevertheless it is a book which demonstrates hope, - timism and belief that people with good will in their hearts can help contribute to finding the way to peace and mutual cooperation in so- in...

Security Studies

As an important aspect of human polity, the concept of security has an important place and space in politics. Though regularly mentioned or referred, the concept is rarely given a proper definition, usually left in the shadows of politics and policymaking and usually referred as a cause to an effect. Within the framework of this book, classic, modern and post-modern security issues are analyzed, while also focusing on the classical and diverse conceptual dimensions of security, current problems are also evaluated, especially in the axis of post-modern security studies. In security studies, a distinction is usually made between classical and post-modern approaches, but in this study, both are considered together. One of the important features of this work is that it offers a perspective from Turkish experts on the concept of security in international relations.

Reflections

"This book calls for us to develop an informed ethos of respect for water, to save ourselves. It counts on readers to reflect honestly on the intimate relationship we have developed with the substance, because the stakes are high. Water has qualities which make it nourishing, cleansing, and unifying. But, as the book shows, we pump aquifers dry, contaminate lakes, fight over rivers, generally using and abusing water at will. Cases from all over the world and especially from the Middle East detail how the lure of profit defeats the counsel to use water sustainably, how chauvinist ideologies lead to inequality with monotonous predictability, and how the violent logic of war both weaponizes and victimizes water. It argues that what we do with water whilst it is in our hands mirrors our behaviour to each other, and that society needs to understand water in a new way to reverse the desecration"--

Water Security in the Middle East explores the extent and nature of water security problems in transboundary water systems in the Middle East. This collection of essays discusses the political and scientific contexts and the limitations of cooperation in water security. The contributors argue that while conflicts over transboundary water systems in the Middle East do occur, they tend not to be violent nor have they ever been the primary cause of a war in this region. The authors place water disputes in larger political, historical and scientific contexts and discuss how the humanities and social sciences could contribute more towards this understanding. They also contend that international s...

Defining Effective Transboundary Water Cooperation

This book establishes a framework for defining transboundary water cooperation and a methodology for evaluating its effectiveness, which will contribute to more effective and therefore successful cooperation processes. With the increasing focus on transboundary cooperation as a part of the Sustainable Development Goal Framework, there is global recognition of transboundary water cooperation as a tool for improved governance and management of transboundary surface and groundwaters. However, there is not an agreed upon definition of transboundary water cooperation in the literature or in practice. This book develops the Four Frames of Transboundary Water Cooperation, which is a neutral modular...

Power and Water in the Middle East

Power and Water in the Middle East' provides a powerful new perspective on the Palestinian-Israeli water conflict. Adopting a new approach to understanding water conflict - hydro-hegemony - the author shows the conflict to be much more deeply entrenched than previously thought and reveals how existing tactics to control water are leading away from peace and towards continued domination and a squandering of this vital resource.Existing approaches tend to play down the negative effects of non-violent water conflict, and what is presented as co-operation between countries often hides an underlying state of conflict between them. The new analytical framework of hydro-hegemony exposes the hidden ...

Fluid Modernity

Fluid Modernity offers an innovative, encompassing, historical grasp of the politics of water in the Middle East in the context of modern capitalism and world politics. Drawing upon conceptions of power by Foucault and Agamben, it examines how water, through its modern capitalist production, is transformed into a water apparatus that binds people to power. In trans-boundary watercourses, states get involved in the formation of international governmentalities. The book revisits the history of fluid modernity in the Middle East from late Ottoman times to the present. It focuses on water conflict and cooperation between states (Israel and Arab states and Turkey, Syria and Iraq), on state polici...
