Prodigal Sons

"A herd of independent minds," Harold Roseberg once labelled his fellow intellectuals. They were, and are, as this book shows, a special and fascinating group, including literary critics like Lionel Trilling, Alfred Kazin, Irving Howe, Leslie Fiedler, Philip Rahv, and William Phillips; social scientists like Nathan Glazer; art critics and historians Clement Greenberg, Harold Rrosenberg, and Meyer Schapiro; novelist Saul Bellow; and political journalists Irving Kristol and Norman Podhoretz. Their story winds through nearly all of the crucial intellectual and political events of the last decades, as well as through the major academic institutions of the nation and the editorial boards of such ...

Arguably the greatest science fiction writer who ever lived, Isaac Asimov also possessed one of the most brilliant and original minds of our time. His accessible style and far-reaching interests in subjects ranging from science to humor to history earned him the nickname “the Great Explainer.” I. Asimov is his personal story—vivid, open, and honest—as only Asimov himself could tell it. Here is the story of the paradoxical genius who wrote of travel to the stars yet refused to fly in airplanes; who imagined alien universes and vast galactic civilizations while staying home to write; who compulsively authored more than 470 books yet still found the time to share his ideas with some of ...

General description of the collection: The Martin Greenberg Papers contain a completed Korean War Veterans Survey questionnaire, a newspaper supplement on Korean War veterans, and clippings regarding Greenberg. Greenberg recalls that the equipment was old and left over from World War II. The clothing was inadequate for the extreme cold, but they made their own heaters out of .30 Caliber ammunition cans and oil. The best leaders were the non-commissioned officers and even then there was very little information given out. He went on his first patrol during his second day on the line. He recalls that artillery and air support were good. The North Koreans and Chinese were not well trained but their weapons were decent. The newspaper clippings are about Greenberg's return to Korea to accept the Freedom Medal along with 40 other veterans. Another article is from the Pacific issue of Stars & Stripes, 10 November 1952, and has to do with the Forward Aid Station, of which Greenberg was a member. The newspaper supplement is from the Citizen's Voice, Wilkes-Barre, PA, 20 July 1992, and is a salute to Korean War veterans in which Greenberg is mentioned and pictured.
