The Cultural Life of Money

The book discusses how culture simultaneously shapes and is shaped by the economy. Over the past few years, as the world has staggered from one financial crisis to another, the neat separation of economics and culture has been consistently challenged. To understand the current state of affairs, it has become increasingly necessary to understand the conjuncture that rules the production of value in economic systems, how money shapes social relations and affects discursive practices. By discussing the vocabulary, by understanding the rhetoric and interpreting the narratives, be it of crisis, austerity, growth, welfare, neo-liberalism or socialism, new modes of imaging the economic system may b...

Lockwood de Forest

"This is the first scholarly book on de Forest. It explores his career in the decorative arts by examining cultural context, material culture, biography, and patronage. Lockwood de Forest (1850-1932) is best known as an artistic decorator with a flair for designs based on the arts and crafts of the Middle East and India. He began his career in partnership with Louis Comfort Tiffany. By 1883, de Forest had his own business and successfully introduced the East Indian craft revival to the United States. His interior designs and furnishings were embraced by some of the wealthiest families of the Gilded Age. His family home at 7 East Tenth Street in New York City served as a designer showcase and was compared to Arab Hall, a pinnacle of exotic design that was part of Frederic, Lord Leighton's home and studio in Holland Park, London. Complemented by sixty color plates and 132 black-and-white illustrations." --Publisher description.

Hyperlocal Organizing: Collaborating for Recovery Over Time explores the difficult work of post-disaster recovery. Jack L. Harris, demonstrates that after disaster, broad interorganizational landscapes are needed to unite the grassroots, neighborhoods, communities, and institutions to solve problems of recovery and bring people home. Yet all too often, government disaster policy and institutions ignore the critical role of local knowledge and organizing. Exploring the organizational landscape of the mid-Atlantic United States after Hurricane Sandy, Harris reveals how participation and collaboration open multiple pathways to recovery after disaster by building resilience and democratizing gov...
