For centuries Christian teachers saw leisure only as a necessary accompaniment of work, a time for the recovery of strength so that work could be resumed. But now the expansion of leisure requires a theological reassessment. These essays are offered as a contribution to that process. In this book hints are taken from a wide variety of theologians, from Augustine and Thomas Aquinas to Pascal, Klerkegaard, Berdyaev, Barth and Moltmann, as well as from sociological writers such as Thorstein Veblen and Josef Pieper. There are also thematic discussions of fantasy and imagination, of freedom-and boredom, and of play, games and laughter. The intention is to stimulate discussion, not to make definitive statements.

Coming of Age in Jewish America takes an inside look at bar and bat mitzvahs in the twenty-first century, examining how the practices have continued to morph and exploring how they serve as a sometimes shaky bridge between the values of contemporary American culture and Judaic tradition. Interviewing o...

Descendants now live in Texas, South Carolina, Alabama, and elsewhere.
The prolonged period of economic expansion after the second world war, and more recent developments such as the impact of information technology, led to predictions of the imminent arrival of a new leisure society. The combination of rising wealth with free time created by technological advance was expected to heighten existing trends towards the dissemination of leisure and consumption throughout social classes and groups. In this international comparative analysis of contemporary leisure and lifestyles, a distinguished team of contributors show that the actual evolution of patterns of work and leisure is more complex. The impact of economic recession in the early 1980s, and of continued cr...
