This qualitative-interpretative study investigates a cohort of twelve English teachers enrolled in the M.A. programme ,E-LINGO – Teaching English to Young Learners'. The aim is to explore if, how and under what circumstances classroom action research, a core component of the pro gramme, can foster teacher learning. Since the participants have different educational and cultu ral back-grounds and various levels of professional experience in the ?eld of language teaching, they offer different perspectives on the object of research. Data from multiple sources are triangulated and interpreted to elicit indicators for learning and development in the form of critical learning incidents. The results suggest that not only cogni tive, but also social and affective factors constitute the complex process of teacher learning.

In this study the practice of identifying individual teachers for the receipt of extrinsic teaching excellence awards is examined with reference to a specific systemic context. Teaching excellence awards and their impact are seen in this study to be potentially connected to teacher morale and the status of teaching. The impact of a variety of award schemes on a sample of teachers in NSW public schools between 2000 and 2002 is identified and scrutinised. Data informing the study were collected from award recipients, their colleagues and documentation relating to the promotion and process of awards. An interpretive/constructivist research paradigm is applied while both qualitative and quantitative data collection methods are employed. Organisational and sociological paradigms are recognised as providing the underpinning theory of the study as a whole in terms of the methodology adopted as well as the theoretical framework employed in the interpretive phase.
