Pharaoh's Land and Beyond

The concept of pharaonic Egypt as a unified, homogeneous, and isolated cultural entity is misleading. Ancient Egypt was a rich tapestry of social, religious, technological, and economic interconnections among numerous cultures from disparate lands. In fifteen chapters divided into five thematic groups, Pharaoh's Land and Beyond uniquely examines Egypt's relationship with its wider world. The first section details the geographical contexts of interconnections by examining ancient Egyptian exploration, maritime routes, and overland passages. In the next section, chapters address the human principals of association: peoples, with the attendant difficulties of differentiating ethnic identities f...

Human mummies, preserved by both accident and intent, have been found on every continent except Antarctica. These enigmatic remains of humanity have fascinated people for centuries. Shrouded in history they have acquired meaning and symbolism quite separate from their value as a source of historic knowledge, inspiring tales of reanimation, reincarnation, loves that outlive death, and curses that bring vengeance from the past. As a figure of horror and the supernatural the mummy has attained iconic status in the popular imagination. The Mammoth Book of the Mummy presents a collection of tales written for the twenty-first century - including some brand-new stories - that explore, subvert and r...

Creating the Hudson River Park

The 4-mile-long, 550-acre Hudson River Park is nearing completion and is the largest park built in Manhattan since Central Park opened more than 150 years ago. It has transformed a derelict waterfront, protected the Hudson River estuary, preserved commercial maritime activities, created new recreational opportunities for millions of New Yorkers, enhanced tourism, stimulated redevelopment in adjacent neighborhoods, and set a precedent for waterfront redevelopment. The Park attracts seventeen million visitors annually. Creating the Hudson River Park is a first-person story of how this park came to be. Working together over three decades, community groups, civic and environmental organizations,...

Seminar paper from the year 2003 in the subject Business economics - Economic Policy, grade: 1,0 (A), University of Lodz (Department of Entrepreneurship), language: English, abstract: In the following paper I want to pay attention to the SME (Small and Medium-sized Enterprises) Sector in Poland. Researches within this Sector are very important, because that sector is the most dynamic in the whole Economy. Entry and Exit Rates of Businesses are about 10 % in the EU (European Union) and are even more in Poland. Noreen Doyle described it as the backbone for a lasting and effective business environment. As well as in the Transitional Period, which will be examined in detail in this paper, as in the accession phase of Poland to become member of EU, the development of the SME Sector will determine the future of Poland to a great extent. After defining this Sector, I will show the development separated in phases since 1980. In the following chapter, I will try to sum up the most important influencing factors for SMEs. Finally, I will consider some specific problems of Poland joining the EU.
