Originally published in 1994, this dictionary provides a unique 'who’s who' of the major figures in the world of British cartoons and caricatures. It was the first book to encompass the entire field from c.1730 when Hogarth published the first of his 'modern moral pictures' to 1980. In addition to describing the careers and achievements of the artists and the characteristics of their styles, more than 500 entries give details of their publications, their illustrations to books and periodicals, exhibitions of their work, public collections in which their work is represented and literature on or referring to them. More than 150 illustrations are included. This is a comprehensive reference work and will be of interest to social and political historians as well as cartoon and caricature enthusiasts.
Monty Python’s Flying Circus aired from 1969 until 1974, but the conclusion of the series did not mark the end of the troupe’s creative output. Rather than string together a series of silly skits, they conceived a full-length story line with references to the real and imagined worlds of the mythical King Arthur, the lives of medieval peasants, and the gloomy climate of 1970s Britain. Released in 1975, Monty Python and the Holy Grail was a modest success but has since been hailed as a modern classic. In A Book about the Film Monty Python...
Divorcé Fergus Munroe meets the beautiful and intriguing Jenny Merridew at a function. The two are drawn to each other and soon fall in love and marry. Happiness abounds and they live each day in a state of bliss. They move into a tiny 300-year-old run-down cottage in Kent where, during renovations, Fergus discovers, hidden in a bedroom wall, the diary of a young girl. The diary describes several gruesome murders which took place in the vicinity over 150 years ago. As more such frightening incidents occur, Jenny starts to become really afraid and decides they should sell the place. However, with a stagnant house market, that is impossible. Jokingly they give their ghost a name but neither Fergus nor Jenny has any inkling of the true horror that awaits them in that sweet, small cottage in the countryside. Caught in the crossfire of superstition and dread, Fergus must unravel the mystery behind this strange entity before it devours the very fabric of their existence. With each passing night, the line between reality and nightmare blurs. The battle for the village becomes a race against time, trapping Fergus and his friends as they fight for their lives.
