Hitler?s Children

First published in 1977 in the US and Britain to universal critical acclaim, Hitler's Children quickly became a world-wide best seller, translated into many other languages, including Japanese. It tells the story of the West German terrorists who emerged out of the 'New Left' student protest movement of the late 1960s. With bombs and bullets they started killing in the name of 'peace'. Almost all of them came from prosperous, educated families. They were 'Hitler's children' not only in that they had been born in or immediately after the Nazi period - some of their parents having been members of the Nazi party - but also because they were as fiercely against individual freedom as the Nazis we...

Children's picture books from the Romantic period. Theatrical stages inspired by Spinoza. Scenes from the Thirty Years' War reimagined by artificial intelligence. What narrative cannot achieve, Alexander Kluge transposes into the logic of images. The first half of the nineth volume of the "Alexander Kluge-Jahrbuch" contains a compilation of Kluge's most recent image experiments that wrestle with crisis and astonishment in the transatlantic public spheres of the twenty-first century. For Kluge, astonishment not only provokes philosophical reflection but also serves as an essential tool for critically grappling with the society of the spectacle. In addition to dialogues with Oskar Negt, Stefan Aust and painter Katharina Grosse, this volume contains scholarly essays on technology and the new space race, cinema and iconoclasm, revolution and Kluge's aesthetic politics, and decolonialism and ecocriticism.

Aust presents the definitive account of the RAF, capturing a highly complex story both accurately and colorfully. Much new information has surfaced since the mass suicide of the Groups' leaders in the 1980s. Some RAF members have come forward to testify in new investigations and formerly classified Stasi documents have been made public since the fall of the Berlin Wall, all contributing to a fuller picture of the RAF and the events surrounding their demise. Aust ranges from the group's creation in 1970 to their breakup in 1998, incorporating all of the new information.

'A rich and readable account of left-wing activism in the West and opposition to Soviet-style communism in the East' Katja Hoyer, The Spectator 'A dream, perhaps, but one that still sounds worth fighting for, even beautiful' Stuart Jeffries, The Observer 'An ambitious and masterly account of utopian protest in Europe ... Fast-paced, with an eye for telling detail and written with a light touch' Robert Gildea In post-war Europe, protest was everywhere. On both sides of the Iron Curtain, from Paris to Prague, Milan to Wroclaw, ordinary people took to the streets, fighting for a better world. Their efforts came to a head most dramatically in 1968 and 1989, when mass movements swept Europe and r...

The fifteen essays in this volume reflect the diversity of German studies in Britain and Ireland today. The German language itself is the focus of four studies, covering historical aspects of German and Yiddish, language pedagogy and controversial contemporary issues, such as the rise of Anglicisms in German and the language of second- and third-generation immigrants. Traditional literary philology is also well represented in six essays on prose writers and dramatists from the nineteenth century to the present day, but it is a traditional philology that has been much modified and enriched by the cultural and historical perspectives evident in the remaining five essays. These include psychoanalytical and contextual studies and embrace the historical development and elaboration of mass media technologies from radio to public-access cable TV.

TERRORISM, FREEDOM FIGHTERS, ARMED STRUGGLE. Adrian Guelke questions whether terrorism has evolved into a new form of political violence or whether it remains essentially unchanged, with violent acts by small groups pursuing their struggles against 'imperialism' and the West. He explores the varying perceptions of, and reactions to, violent acts in the developed and developing worlds both within and across national boundaries and examines how 'terrorist' groups join the peace process and take their part in state, society and 'legitimate' government. This stimulating and strongly-argued interpretation of terrorism uncovers its theoretical and practical mainsprings and shows that 9/11, the subsequent attacks in London, Madrid, Bali, and even the concept of a global war on terrorism, may have changed perceptions and increased the fear of mass-casualties, but have not altered its basic nature.
