Nefertiti’s Sun Temple (2 vols.)
Nefertiti’s Sun Temple publishes stone relief fragments excavated from the site of Kom el-Nana at Tell el-Amarna, Egypt, dating to approximately 1350 BCE. This is the first time relief fragments can be associated with a specific wall from a specific temple at Tell el-Amarna. Jacquelyn Williamson reconstructs the architecture, art, and inscriptions from the site to demonstrate Kom el-Nana is the location of Queen Nefertiti’s ‘Sunshade of Re’ temple and another more enigmatic structure that served the funerary needs of the non-royal courtiers at the ancient city. The art and inscriptions provide new information about Queen Nefertiti and challenge assumptions about her role in Pharaoh Akhenaten’s religious movement dedicated to the sun god Aten.
Portrait Mummies from Roman Egypt (I-IV Centuries A.D.)
In Egypt of the 1st century AD an alternative was introduced to the traditional use of painted masks of papier-mache on wrapped and decorated mummies. A new technique, borrowed from the Hellenic tradition of painting in encaustic (coloured wax) or water colour on wooden panels or linen sheets, involved the production of realistic images of the faces of men, women and children. Newly-discovered Statues from Giza, 1990-2009
This new publication from the Egyptian Ministry of State for Antiquities shares the exciting story of the discovery of many unique statues during the excavations of Dr. Zahi Hawass from 1990 through 2009 at Giza. Both Old Kingdom and New Kingdom are represented, including statues of King Menkaure and of Per-ni-ankhu, a dwarf. The most important excavation site was the cemetery of the pyramid builders, near the Great Sphinx. The statues found there, and at the other sites, reveal the exceptional creativity of the ancient sculptors, whose depictions of personages both royal and private continue to fascinate us thousands of years after their making.
Egyptian Museum collections around the worls
The Egyptian Museum in Cairo is the greatest treasure-house of ancient Egyptian art there is, but major museums--and many smaller museums--in other countries throughout the world also boast fine Egyptian collections. While archaeologists excavate the remains of pyramids, temples, and tombs, scholars at museums, universities, and other institutions are also furthering the understanding of ancient Egyptian culture through their study of the artifacts contained in the world's Egyptian galleries. To celebrate the centennial of the Egyptian Museum, which opened its doors in 1902, museum directors and Egyptologists were invited to contribute accounts of Egyptian collections or studies of Egyptian artifacts around the world.
