The Malay Nobat

The Malay Nobat: A History of Power, Acculturation, and Sovereignty explores the history and meaning of the nobat, a court ensemble that has performed music for courts in Malaysia and Brunei with roots in the Islamicate world since Abbassid times. Raja Iskandar Bin Raja Halid examines the nobat spread throughout the Muslim empire and its emergence as a symbol of power and sovereignty. The author argues that the nobat was an important symbol of Muslim power and analyzes the effect of the nobat’s appropriation by colonial powers and of its induction as part of an invented tradition in the process of nation-building a modern Malay state. The author ultimately shows how existing nobat ensembles are the last living musical legacy of the Muslim world.

The Palgrave Handbook of FinTech and Blockchain

Financial services technology and its effect on the field of finance and banking has been of major importance within the last few years. The spread of these so-called disruptive technologies, including Blockchain, has radically changed financial markets and transformed the operation of the industry as a whole. This is the first multidisciplinary handbook of FinTech and Blockchain covering finance, economics, and legal aspects globally. With comprehensive coverage of the current landscape of financial technology alongside a forward-looking approach, the chapters are devoted to the spread of structured finance, ICT, distributed ledger technology (DLT), cybersecurity, data protection, artificial intelligence, and cryptocurrencies. Given an unprecedented 2020, the contributions also address the consequences of the current emergency, and the pandemic stroke, which is revolutionizing social and economic paradigms and heavily affecting Fintech, Blockchain, and the banking sector as well, and would be of particular interest to finance academics and researchers alongside banking and financial services professionals.

Dialogic Ethics

Dialogic Ethics

Dialogic Ethics offers an impressionistic picture of the diversity of perspectives on this topic. Daily we witness local, regional, national, and international disputes, each propelled by contention over what is and should be the good propelling communicative direction and action. Communication ethics understood as an answer to problems often creates them. If we understand communication ethics as a good protected and promoted by a given set of communicators, we can understand how acts of colonialism and totalitarianism could move forward, legitimized by the assumption that “I am right.” This volume eschews such a presupposition, recognizing that we live in a time of narrative and virtue contention. We dwell in an era where the one answer is more often dangerous than correct.

Complicite, Theatre and Aesthetics

This book presents a pioneering critical study of Complicite’s work throughout the years. Drawing on an extensive overview of the available research material – including interviews, manuscripts and the company’s own archive – the book is framed within a clearly defined research perspective and explores the singularity of theatre communication. The book results from an encounter between the London-based – but cosmopolitan in scope – company, and a fresh application of the form-oriented scholarship of Eastern Europe, Yuri Lotman’s semiosphere in particular. Focused on the aesthetics of Complicite, this study achieves a critical distance and undertakes multidimensional scrutiny of the available research material. By identifying the principles of Complicite’s aesthetics, the book attempts to grasp the company’s artistic paradigm. It focuses on ways of creating, preserving, and decoding meanings, rather than on the nuances of performance or contextual issues.

Sexuality in Medieval Poland in a European Context

This book explores the development of sexual ethics in medieval Poland, focusing on how the process of Christianization integrated Poland into the Western European cultural sphere, and how the adoption of Christian norms and practices significantly shaped its moral and legal views on sexuality. Drawing on a wide array of primary sources, the study highlights the tension between official ecclesiastical views and the lived experiences of individuals, while also addressing the ways in which various aspects of sexuality – such as marital life, chastity, adultery, sexual misconduct, and prostitution – were understood, regulated, and punished by both secular and religious authorities. It analy...
