This study traces the importance of Italy as a source of literary inspiration in the work of the Swabian poet Wilhelm Waiblinger (1804-1830), who spent the last four years of his life, the most prolific of his career, living and traveling in Italy. Drawing on Waiblinger’s poems, travel accounts, letters and diaries, Thompson compiles and analyzes Waiblinger’s thoughts on and engagement with Italian art, literature, music, people and landscapes as well as the themes of antiquity, Renaissance, and Catholicism.

But, afflicted by the pressures of life and a doomed love affair, he gradually went mad, and spent the final 36 years of his life in a solitary tower in Tü bingen, cared for by a kindly carpenter. The younger poet Wilhelm Waiblinger, one of the few people to gain Hö lderlin's confidence, visited him often. Franz Kafka was a self-conscious writer whose texts were highly if mysteriously autobiographical. Three giants of contemporary fiction—J. M. Coetzee, Philip Roth, and W. G. Sebald—have all acknowledged their debt to the work of Kafka, both in interviews and in their own academic essays and articles for a general readership about him. In this striking feat of literary scholarship, Daniel Medin finds that the use of Kafka by Coetzee, Roth, and Sebald is similarly self-reflexive and autobiographical. That writers from such divergent national and ethnic traditions can have such unique critical readings of Kafka, and that Kafka could exert such a powerful influence over their oeuvres, Medin contends, attests to the central place of Kafka in the contemporary literary imagination.
