This book elucidates how cyberGIS (that is, new-generation geographic information science and systems (GIS) based on advanced computing and cyberinfrastructure) transforms computation- and data-intensive geospatial discovery and innovation. It comprehensively addresses opportunities and challenges, roadmaps for research and development, and major progress, trends, and impacts of cyberGIS in the era of big data. The book serves as an authoritative source of information to fill the void of introducing this exciting and growing field. By providing a set of representative applications and science drivers of cyberGIS, this book demonstrates how cyberGIS has been advanced to enable cutting-edge sc...

Temporal Pattern Mining in Dynamic Environments

Many domains feature a dynamic characteristic like logistics, sports, or medicine and it would be useful to learn about frequent patterns, e.g., in what situations a traffic jam is likely to happen. Additionally, we are facing complex situations with many objects and relations that might change over time. The learning approach developed in this work identifies frequent temporal patterns out of qualitative, interval-based descriptions of dynamic scenes by extending the Apriori algorithm and combining ideas from relational as well as sequential association rule mining approaches. Temporal relations in patterns are represented by qualitative interval relations as they have been introduced by Allen and Freksa. The search for frequent patterns is a top-down approach starting by the most general (empty) pattern and performing specialization steps by applying an optimal refinement operator. In a second step, prediction rules are generated by splitting the identified patterns into precondition and consequence parts. The developed concepts are implemented in the MiTemP system and are evaluated on synthetic data and soccer matches of the RoboCup simulation league.

Agent and Multi-Agent Systems: Technologies and Applications

This book constitutes the proceedings of the Third International Symposium on Agent and Multi-Agent Systems: Technologies and Applications, held in Uppsala, Sweden, during June 3-5, 2009. The 86 papers contained in this volume were carefully reviewed and selected from numerous submissions. There are 13 main tracks covering the methodology and applications of agent and multi-agent systems and 8 special sessions on specific topics within the field. The papers are divided in topical sections on social and organizational structures of agents; negotiation protocols; mobile agents and robots; agent design and implementation; e-commerce; simulation systems and game systems; agent systems and ontologies; agents for network systems; communication and agent learning systems; Web services and semantic Web; self-organization in multi-agent systems; management and e-business; mobile and intelligent agents for networks and services; engineering interaction protocols; agent-based simulation, decision making and systems optimization; digital economy; agent-based optimization (ABO2009); distributed systems and artificial intelligence applications.

This book is an extended collection of contributions that wereoriginally subm- ted to the 1st International Workshop on Adaptive Multimedia Retrieval (AMR 2003), which was organized as part of the 26th German Conference on Arti?cial Intelligence (KI 2003),and held during September 15–18,2003at the University of Hamburg, Germany. Motivated by the overall success of the workshop – as revealed by the stimulating atmosphere during the workshop and the number of very interested and active participants – we ?nally decided to edit a book based on revised papers that were initially submitted to the workshop. Furthermore, we invited some more introductory contributions in order to be able to pr...

Data Mining for Geoinformatics

Data Mining for Geoinformatics

The rate at which geospatial data is being generated exceeds our computational capabilities to extract patterns for the understanding of a dynamically changing world. Geoinformatics and data mining focuses on the development and implementation of computational algorithms to solve these problems. This unique volume contains a collection of chapters on state-of-the-art data mining techniques applied to geoinformatic problems of high complexity and important societal value. Data Mining for Geoinformatics addresses current concerns and developments relating to spatio-temporal data mining issues in remotely-sensed data, problems in meteorological data such as tornado formation, estimation of radi...
